This tree has real presence and character, making it look old and crotchety like me. It is my kind of tree. The pictures suggest the canopy is taking the energy from the lower branches. This is probably in part due to 2D pictures but beware and be sure its not happening. I'm sure you...

    BALD CYPRESS

No doubt. Most bald cypress look best in spring with buds green and just beginning to open. The next best look is winter with no leaves. I defoliate mine at least once each season mainly because of the climate and the battering the leaves take. If i don't do it the leaves are bronzing and...

    BALD CYPRESS

Interesting design. Very well manicured. Beautiful with no leaves. Probably not beautiful with leaves.

    I'm nervous, but excited!

You should consider planting it in the ground and growing it in the ground for a few years to develop the trunkline and taper and basic primary branching. If you are deadset on putting it in a pot, then you need to remove the dirt from the roots, do some aggressive rootwork and put it in a...

Trident Maple repotting advice sought - buds opened earlier than expected

Regarding the timing of repotting, you can be more aggressive with trident maples, meaning repotting further into the growing season. You were showing bud movement and commenting on the timing of repotting a trident versus japanese maple. My experience is that once your trees begin to leave...

Trident Maple repotting advice sought - buds opened earlier than expected

I have nothing to add that was not said already, except I think you have your Japanese Maple and Trident Maple hardiness reversed.

    First repot of 2024

It's going to be almost 60 degrees F here in SW Michigan today. Its easy to get ahead of schedule when deluded by days like this. I keep telling myself, "steady, hold, hold, hold...."

    Huge a$$ trident

Leaving the heavy trunk branching would have resulted in a neat oak-style tree but you would have had bad trunk swelling and inverse taper with all that heavy growth from one general area of the trunk. Now that you striped it down to a single trunk line, put it in the ground to gain vigorous...

    ROR Trident project

I bet if you covered the soil in moss or sphagnum the roots would fill the pot faster. Pros and cons to doing that, but it does cause prolific fine root growth.

    Trident maple conundrum

Tridents don't typically make good broom style trees like zelkova, so if that is your goal you may want to reconsider. Plus you usually want the upper broom to pair with a buttressed base with good radial roots, which you do not have. I would consider doing what @Bonsai Nut said and maybe...

    Seasonal work!

I still have over 2000 tridents in pots. Most are young, in the 4-10 year range. Some of my old large tridents can go several years between repotting. The growing stock should be done every other year. Shohin every year. Its a 12 round title fight every spring just on tridents alone.

    Seasonal work!

My spring consists of all kinds of shenanigans to delay spring because I need a long potting/repotting season. Also, I use a greenhouse for a lot of my established trees and February sun here in Michigan comes on strong and creates spring in the greenhouse when its not spring outside the...

It's an addiction...no doubt about it.

In its current state its tricky. Lots of long/ low-hanging branching on the right and very little on the left. The heavy trunk line goes left, but there is a lot of activity up there going right. The tallest point is actually from a back branch. I suggested the round pot based on all of...

It's an addiction...no doubt about it.

It looks good. I like the tree. I like the pot. I don't like the tree in the pot. Its not my tree or my pot, so my liking does not matter. Just a thought, a round pot might be better until you develop some balance. Then you'd have an empty pot to fill too....

    My large pomegranate

I would consider using a piece of wood that rests on the front and back pot walls rather than the soil. Wire the wood in place and it will be more stable than the block sitting on the soil surface. And you can wire your tree to it for more stability.

    My large pomegranate

I liked it better when it was more upright. I don't think this angle will work well long term.

Too late to repot this old crab apple?

They generally don't fill in. You usually have thicker branches that don't ramify. Let it grow for a season so you know what leaf, flower and fruit sizes you're working with. Then you can decide what style/look will compliment it. If you want to use the upward growing branch as a new trunk...

    Green house for one.

For a short term solution that's a good use, but you really don't want to keep your tree in there long term. @Cadillactaste is spot on with airflow. That is a breeding ground for fungus and insects.
