2015 BSC (Box Store Challenge) Update Thread

Thanks for reminding me - I thought June still had a few more days left! I think I'm going to throw in the towel though. My tree really struggled until a couple of weeks ago - lots of nice new growth now but a lot of branches died and it looks terrible. If it makes a comeback by the end of the...

2015 BSC (Box Store Challenge) Update Thread

Here's my Acacia cognata with a new front (gotta love round pots) showing my secret second trunk. Still not the right pot but getting closer at least size-wise. Sharon

2015 BSC (Box Store Challenge) Update Thread

Mr. Pall was correct when he said about my entry: “This will look as it does now forever”. I think this variety of Acacia cognata grows a couple of inches per year so the only dramatic changes you’ll see with my Cousin Itt is when he gets his perfect container. I’m thinking slab with the tree...

Well, I've put in the time so I guess I'm Advanced although I've really only been dabbling all these years. Here's my entry if it flies. Acacia cognata 'Cousin Itt'.

    Where to hack this Hackberry?

Like Judy said 'figure out what your end goal is for the tree to be styled like' - that is exactly my problem. I'm not picturing anything yet. Well, OK now I can picture a Ben Oki-type tree. And it's good to hear that it doesn't have to be a broom style. Hopefully, I can find inspiration soon...

    Where to hack this Hackberry?

Dang Al, I wish I was but I'm not going to make to it Santa Nella this time. I would have liked to have gotten your opinion (and maybe some chopping). Have fun!

    Where to hack this Hackberry?

OK, now I've chickened out about chopping it. I would hate to cut too much off. Brian's advice seems reasonable - reduce the shoots and give it another year. Just repotting will be a big enough project for now. But...I feel like I could change my mind again any minute now. With the 6:1 height...

    Where to hack this Hackberry?

I saved this 24" box Celtis occidentalis from the dumpster at work in November 2010. It wasn't easy (involved a chainsaw on the top and bottom) but I chopped it down enough to get it into my little car. I wasn't sure it would even survive but apparently it has (all the growth is post-chop)...

Ume! :) Post Em If Ya Got Em

Not actually ume but it is a plum. Third is a pic with it's mother (who had more flowers before last night's storm). Great tasting plums but I don't know what variety it is.

    Japanese Maple bark problem

Update: I contacted both the Agricultural Commissioner and the Master Gardeners here and it turns out it was just some good old harmless lichen. I was told 'Lichens are composite organisms and consist of a mutualistic relationship between algae and a fungi. The algae are typically...

    Japanese Maple bark problem

I couldn't find Captan but I picked up some Daconil Fungicide and Bonide Copper Fungicide. Would either of these work?

    Japanese Maple bark problem

What is happening to my maple?? It's getting these oroange patches and bumps on the bark here and there. I took a magnifying glass to them and saw that they're not insects. The bumps don't come off with a light fingernail scratch. Please tell me I can save this tree. Thanks, Sharon
