    Fall2019 ponderosa

Thanks for the replies. I collected the tree in fall of 2019 & it's been in 100% Pumice. It grew so well it burst the first box(cedar fence boards) and I re-potted in the end of summer keeping the outside untouched and clearing out the remaining soil from collection around the core of the root...

    Yamadori Construction side collection

This is a great way to get material. Some will die due to mistreatment before you get your hands on them, or perhaps from the work you have to do fo get them manageable. eg cutting large roots. I will typically bare root most trees, and clear out some clutter on the top that l know will not be...

    Knocking on doors

Yes, a letter has worked well for me in the past. People are pleased to open something that isn't a bill. Plus, it doesn't put them on the spot.

Olea europea - my first carving

Olive seem to bud from the trunk frequently. I usually rub them off, unless you want a branch to grow out. If that is the case you would have to grow one out, so that it is thicker than the ones above it.

    TJ’s Big Siberian Elm

When you do cut back...(spring) don't worry it will throw tons of buds at the cuts and below. They are fun responsive trees. Looks like good material.

Once the foliage drys out and gets crispy...there is no coming back, right? Despite misting?

    TYPE OF ELM PLEASE???IDENTIFICATION.

Looks like siberian elm to me. They grow.like weeds and are invasive. They are fun trees to work with.

    Deadwood on chinese elm

I personally would leave it for now. That basic carving may weather out by the time the tree grows out more. Using power tools can be tricky, and you wouldn't want to damage that main branch/leader. I would suggest practicing carving on downed branches you find on your property or neighborhood...

    When to become concerned?

I think one thing that drives this obsession is the diversity of styles and techniques, not to mention all the species to try. Well, I don't have a maple clump project yet...

I need Help for my Juniper

I fear that it may be too late for this one. From my experience, once they get dry a d loose the vibrant green, they seldom come back. You can try misting the foliage.

Looks like a fun project. I would personally shorten the non-cascading side.

Juniper styling question (J. Squamata Blue Star)

You also might let it sit for the season and see if one side dies off, depending on how many roots you recovered while collecting. I sometimes have some die back if l had to cut roots.

    Collected Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata)

Hartinez, Yeah, l collected it from the middle of an old BLM road. l imagine the bottom of trucks gave it the bends. The road was so seldom driven that it had since recovered. Haven't done any work on it. It has much tighter foliage than my other sagebrush, so l couldn't pass it up

    Collected Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata)

I picked up one this past fall. Seems to be doing well. I think if we can get the feeder roots, they will take off. It seems like they often have a strong tap root. Mine is in 100 percent perlite.

    Collected Live Oak

Personally, l would.cut the suckers now and leave the shoots on the trunk alone, and let the tree recover. Later on you can wire those to add some movement.
