    Somewhat new to Bonsai.

For fine pine bark in small quantities go to the pet store. They sell bags of pine bark for reptiles that are all under 1/4 inch dont need sifting. They cost a little more since they have to sterilized for the animals but in a pinch they work great.

    San Fran Bonsai

Everyone, I am getting shipped around California for two weeks for work (single tear) and thought I might try and find some new trees while I am out there. It looks like I will be near downtown San Fran for the weekend and if anyone knows of good nurseries or gardens to visit I would...

I am going to Chattanooga for a week on vacation with my family. Does anyone know of any good bonsai related locations to see in that area. Google didnt seem to find any when I quickly searched :(

    Scots Pine advice

Digger, I got a Scott's Pine from a club member and I would be interested to find out more about it as well. I actually had to plant mine in the ground, over a tile, this past winter because the entire tree looked a little weak and I wanted to try and get it back to good health as soon as...

    Plant City

Do you happen to have an address, or cross street that would help me find it on a map? I am from Jacksonville and am not very familiar with that area.

    opinions on my new boxwood

Personally looking at the roots I find the one large root that crosses the others very distracting. It is hard to know whether you could remove that without trying to atleast get in the rootball some and see how much of the root system is attached to this area. Personally I am having fun with...

    Western Display Concepts

In looking at the pictures posted by Yamadori I think I see what is trying to be accomplished however I am not sure it will work in all cases. Although the pairing on Bonsai and Art is a great concept it can be problematic when both pieces are competing for attention. In the first two pictures...

    How did you get started?...

My wife worked at a zoo and one of the horticulture guys brought in a miniature maple tree. She told me about it and she was fascinated that he could make a tree look so realistic but so small. Well this made me real excited and she introduced us and I began going to every presentation he put...

    Wonderful Wisteria

Beautiful Honest before this year I have never heard of Wisteria but seeing them all here is inspiring. That is a tree even my wife would love. Maybe next time it gets a haircut I could steal some cuttings

    Old Barberry

My thought I like the second picture in post 10. The slight tilt in angle and movement of the trunks is great. The only distraction is the large circular scar in the base but that could easily be carved to make it look more natural. No matter what good luck and I think you have a few options...

    Root-over-rock Trident Maples

Fertilize I actually just got out my notes from that meeting and am going to go buy some new fertilizer this weekend. The cuts I was asking about were on the tree itself not the roots.

    Root-over-rock Trident Maples

Inspiration Paul as always good work. A composition that is coming together very quickly for you. It makes me see that I am not fertilizing my maples nearly enough. My only question is how much die back you expect at the cut points if any. I assume the maples are very strong with all the...

    Cass Bonsai (St. Louis)

Another Option If you are in school in central Illinois you should look up TwinCity Bonsai in Bloomington Normal. It is mainly small prebonsai but the owner Ed Hernandez can get anything you need/want and his prices are some of the most reasonable I have ever come across. That is just another...

Ideas needed to Enhance my Bonsai Club

Thanks Everyone, Thank you for your responses and keep them coming. They will really help our club. Some of them (regarding Leadership/dictatorship) are spot on. I am relatively new to the club (2 years) but have had the chance to talk to some of the old members through other meetings and...

Ideas needed to Enhance my Bonsai Club

I recently was elected president of the North Florida Bonsai Club and I am trying to develop new ideas to keep the club fresh and exciting for the members. Our typical format has revolved around 30 min of administrative discussion each meeting then approx 1 1/2 - 2 hours on a given topic (due...

    Just thought i'd share

Nice Tree I went to undergrad and grad school there and I know exactally which tree that is. It is a really nice tree even with some of the bad branch cuts that have been made by the groundskeepers over the years. Thanks for posting.

    Azalea: what ailment is this?

Leaf Spot I think this is the same thing we are having in Florida due to a very wet summer that is overly humid. I am no expert but it is most likely some kind of leaf spot of anthracnose. http://umassgreeninfo.org/fact_sheets/diseases/rhododendron_leaf_spot.pdf

    Thickening Fukien Tea

Temperature Yeah I live in north florida so depending on the map you look at I am in zone 8b/9a. My only real experiment was last winter with a couple cuttings and they really struggled to come back this spring compared to my indoor collection. We had a colder winter than normal with multiple...
