    How big is the tree and pot? If it is a medium sized or larger tree it should be fine... jbp are tough trees, but if it is a shohin it may need some insulation around the container to protect the roots... I heel my smaller pines into the ground in a shady spot for winter and they laugh at 0...

    What would you do with 10 Japanese Maple seedlings?

    Build a shallow grow box 24" square, about 6" deep and let them grow for a few years... you will get nice radial roots and transplanting will be a snap!

    Be careful with Turface!

    Thats what I do also, and my trees are quite happy in turface/lava mix! I have never had problems with turface except in wet winters it almost holds too much water.

    Have you ever seen this?

    I know for sure that shortleaf pine needles are borne in 2's and 3's at the same time on many trees, ponderosa pine in 3's or 2's sometimes, and loblolly pine in 3's or 2' occasionaly. Not sure about korean black pine, I missed that part, sorry if I caused any confusion.

    Certain types of pines will have needles in pairs of 2 and 3 on the same tree. This is normal.

    Sunshine

    Your Maples will need some protection from sun in the hottest part of the day. My japanese maples get evening shade and they still get leaf scorch from the heat. Junipers can take full sun, but I give mine a little shade. My bench gets morning/early afternoon sun and evening shade so it works...

    rooting japanese black pine from cuttings

    Bummer, I always want to try jbp cuttings but never get around to it... probably because I know they are gonna fail... If you could get 2 out of every 100 to strike it would probably be worth it though
