    Oak in Training

The trunk is very nice but those longer branches need to be cut back hard. These trees back bud very easily and now is the time to do it. Also, I am faily successful using guy wires on this species. Great starter material. Good luck! Rch

Wabi 18 can be bought here: http://www.bonsai-s-cube.com/SHOP/wabi18.html there is an American to contact to purchase stuff from their site. My wife is Japanese and I might order some and have them sent to the inlaws and then sent here. They are pretty cheap. The magazine is no longer...

    Ponderosa bent into show shape.

Do ponderosas do well without really cold winters? I don't see too many of them, so I thought we just don't get cold enough during the winter in the lower elevation pats of California. The tree looks great! Rich

    Best bonsai for $200-300?

WOW! you've done alot since I last checked this thread. I'd slow down and perhaps buy some bonsai books or magazines. By looking at quality bonsai, you will have a better idea of how to pick out material. When I buy material, I am purchasing all of the things I don't want to do myself. Such...

Help on collecting a Cork Oak.

Thanks. The oak is a Quercus Suber not a native oak. So nobody will raise a fuss. Plus its almost nonexistent to most people because its been chopped to about 8-9 inches tall. I might dig it this weekend but will probably wait until next week because of the Super Bowl. Its pretty straght but has...

    Best bonsai for $200-300?

You should definitly be able to find a juniper similar or better than the first pic at a bonsai nursery for your price range. Make sure you can take care of it or it will be a big waste of money. Also when people tend to to have fewer trees and new to the hobby they have a habit of tinkering...

Help on collecting a Cork Oak.

Thanks. I was worried about the tap root. Hopefully there are some roots closer to the surface because the yard is watered so often. I'll take your advice and check to see first. If not, its been there 15 years it can wait another one. Rich

Help on collecting a Cork Oak.

Hello all, My neighbor has a cork oak that was planted by some squirrels about fifteen years ago in his front yard. He said that he chopps it down every few years because he is too lazy to dig it out. It is about 3-4 inches in diameter and about 8-9 inches tall. The bark is completely corked...

Ryan Neil Bonsai show in Portland?

Thanks Bob for clarifying things. I didn't mean to start a firestorm of controversy by starting this thread. I just thought this event would spark the interest of those on BNut. Upstate New York is pretty far for me to travel to look at "little trees." Portland on the other hand is much more...

Ryan Neil Bonsai show in Portland?

I hear ya. Maybe that's what they want. He made a reference to the Ginko awards and Noelanders. Does anybody know if this is how they are run? I think that the way to lift the level of bonsai is to start with the structure the USA already has in place: local clubs. There are many really good...

Ryan Neil Bonsai show in Portland?

He did not mention anything about Professionals only but that might be the case. I don't know how a professionals only show would work in America. Most "Professionals" (I.E. those who teach bonsai have day jobs) there are very few in the USA who only do bonsai and they might not even have the...

Ryan Neil Bonsai show in Portland?

So I was at the BayArea bonsai associates show last night in Oakland and Ryan Neil was doing a demo. As he was working he started talking about Noeleanders trophy in Europe and the Ginko Awards and how they really kick started the improvements of Euro bonsai. He asked the crowd if we had...

    Junipers on parade

Very Nice. You make me want to add more junipers to my growing collection. I love the Jins on that tall literati. Most people would get rid of the lower ones. I commend you for keeping them on. It makes the tree have a more natural feeling. Rich
