Anybody get winterburn on some of their trees?

I am thinking freeze thaw cycles, it can warm considerably in sheds and garages. Also by the doors they may have gotten the cold drafts after warming. Do the look like a whitish color over most of the needles?

Mid Atlantic Bonsai Society Convention 4/17-4/19

Great festival this year. The artists were fantastic, accessible, friendly, and good at teaching bonsai. The vendors area was packed to the gills. Bill had some nice goodies, I got some seedlings from him. A Sara Raynor pot from Pauline Muths booth, assorted tools, and left assorted drools, as...

    Judging New Talent

I will leave it at, I wish I had seen this in writing before I made an attempt at this, would have made a huge difference, HUGE. Spot on Al, spot on. At one point I was seeing if the majority of the tree would snap off, but I stopped and used the whole thing. Later Charles Cerronnio asked...

    Bonsai soil mixes

The bark doesn't really slime either. Look For article by Colin Lewis, and search the threads here, there are enough pages to keep you reading for a while. A common soil now is straight pumice and lava, no organics, and it works well. Find Collins article.

Took a Break this Summer, what I been doing....

I saw this yesterday Later on hit the road and talked with a customer about the work they were doing. In the middle of the conversation I looked over to where they had been digging and ended leaving with this. Guessing milk but could have been cream I guess, it from an old local dairy, Asselins...

Violence averted at the San Diego Bonsai Pavilion

Friends of mine growing up had to go to the yard to get mom or dad a switch if they did bad things. HUGE deterrent. I mean I watched him toss out a branch that was too small, saying he would get it worse if the switch wasn't going to fit the punishment. I am a firm believer that children...

Digging up ficus and replanting every spring?

Someone I know grows a lot of stock using rootmaker grow bags, with great success. Not for pulling trops every year, but it could fit the bill for this. I have seen another garden that has hardy banana's, in the ground and dozens of probably 25 gal pots of various large tropical plants...

The smell will be there no matter what. Rather than leave the stuff about, to be stolen by whatever critter it might be, I make a tea. You can use your favorite what ever it might be, I make a mix these days, and water it in frequently. Some of the ingredients I have been using of late are (...

What to do with this Procumbens na na?

A finished bonsai, is a dead bonsai. That's when you stop wiring. Have to disagree, this will need a lot of wiring. Not wiring it leaves it as a bush in a pot. Wiring gives the finished look to the trees we strive for. Not wiring it is quitting. This will look so much better thinned and...
