    Acer breaking dormancy

Frosty- It's easy to get offended here, but the cranky old guys really do have a wealth of knowledge. I would just hang around and glean what you can. There are a lot of nice people to meet here too! :)

My new nursery find- 'Jacqueline Hillier'

Oh my, I didn't check this post for a couple weeks....took me a while to read through it... Amazing how asking a little advice on an elm turns into a huge debate on the value of trees.... Anyway, thank for the rendering and your suggestion Tachigi. That's probably what I'll do. Is it better...

My new nursery find- 'Jacqueline Hillier'

I went intending to buy a seiju and cam home with this. Any ideas? I was thinking some air layering in several places. It is in a 5 gallon container and the trunk is pretty thick.

A Seiju Triple Trunk, and a Hokkaido Penjing

I went to a nursery today looking for a seiju, and came home with a Jacqueline Hillier. Right now, it looks like a giant tuning fork, but it has a fat trunk and a lot of air layering possibilities. Elm

    Hokkaido Elm

I've seen literature that they like full sun, but my Hokkaido Elms seem to like half sun. I have mine in diotomacious earth granular, fast draining inorganic soil. I re-potted them in June and one in July, and they both have new roots and new growth. There is no die-back yet, But I only got...

A Seiju Triple Trunk, and a Hokkaido Penjing

The Hokkaido Elm is so brittle, that the first day I got it, re-potted and broke most of the branches off. I found I can wire the thin, branches, but only if I can easily move them with my hand.

    Soil Recipie?

Yes, in powder form it has different uses. But this is granular about the size of cat litter. In fact, the first run off when you water it can be collected and put in a spray bottle and used to spray and kill aphids and other pests.

    What type of maple?

Thanks. I didn't think it was too great, but I have tons of different maple species all around, and these seedlings just popping up everywhere. I saw a few that looked like trident, but really tiny still. I also have tons of Japanese maple seedlings, the whole neighborhood has mature Japanese...

    Soil Recipie?

Rick- Thanks for the info. I'm sorry- I wasn't trying to make an absolute statement of DE is better than akadama, it's just something I heard about when I was researching soils. I would really like to try akadama (that was my first choice actually) but is is pricey and hard to come by in my...

    Soil Recipie?

Of course I do...I'm just a beginner...I'm just posting my results thus far. (it's only been 4 months) I'm kinda just experimenting here. My limited research is by no means completed. If you have had experience with using DE as a soil, then please let me know what you found out about it...

    Soil Recipie?

Well, the maple sapling was just growing in my yard from the neighbor's tree, and thought I'd try it in the soil. It wasn't anything important, if I left it, it would have been mowed anyway.... I also have a greenhouse for overwintering. I don't have any bonsai in the house. Other...

    Soil Recipie?

How do you mess around with it?? Like you mean genetically modifying it in my secret underground lab? I've been keeping them moist and never allowing them to dry out. I transplanted them 4 months ago, trimmed the roots like the bonsai book said to and planted them in pre-moistened...

    Hello-New here...

Thanks for the nice compliments. I would like to air layer my maple, just trying to figure out a good branch... I got a second box (not in picture) and left it more of a mushroom style. Waiting for that perfect apex, needs some more growth on the top. It's more of a Mame size. I went crazy...

With the diotomacious earth, here are my results so far with 100% diotomacious earth: Well so far, I've had my Hokkaido Elms in it for about 4 months, and they love it. Grew new roots really fast and lots of new growth. My lilac Didn't do so hot. It died... The branches underneath are...

    Soil Recipie?

I'm kinda new here, but I use Super Absorb sold by Napa Auto Parts. 100% diotomacious earth. granular. I learned that some bonsai clubs have been using it exclusively for years and have had great results with it. So far so good for me, and it's really cheap.
