At what temps should Japanese Maples be shaded?

Right now, my maples are all in full sun from about 9 AM to 7 PM, but once the oak trees on the west side of my yard leaf out in a week or two, they’ll be in that spot of high shade by mid afternoon at the latest.

At what temps should Japanese Maples be shaded?

I suspect high/filtered shade by early afternoon is ideal, regardless of climate, assuming you're wanting those pristine blemish-free fall leaves ala @MACH5. Some kind of wind break is also helpful. I can swing the afternoon shade in my yard but the wind is another story.

What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

Yeah, but that 2-door civic gets such great mileage, you can make multiple trips;) and save $$ in the long run!

Too late to get this JM in better soil?

I'd add soil until it's slightly higher than where the first branch leaves the main trunk.

Lime Sulfur safe for maples in leaf or no?

I think your issue is possibly related to either- very heavy soil and overpotting, improper repotting (timing, overaggressive root removal), or improper overwintering. The brown spots on the trunk could be bruises secondary to trauma or due to Pseudomonas syringae... time will tell. Fwiw, I've...

Still not dead… maybe next month😬. Raised the level of roots up a bit… seems to be a theme this spring 😉

Too late to get this JM in better soil?

I would ground layer this plant right at the graft union, scraping away all the bark and cambium down at least one inch. Apply rooting hormone above the ring of exposed wood and add more soil until the sight of the layer is covered by at least an inch. I’ve never used a wire and have been 100%...

Too late to get this JM in better soil?

I’ve repotted stock further along on that. If your plan is to eventually replace the roots, I wouldn’t bother doing a lot of work on them. Take the tree out of the pot and very gently remove as much soil as you can from the roots Without being too aggressive, but there’s no need to completely...

Too late to get this JM in better soil?

If this were mine, I wouldn't be considering a repot at all but I would be considering either a ground layer this spring or next.

At least, in Georgia, they flowered and produce fruit regularly. Now that I’m paying attention to this neglected little clump, I’ll be able to follow it more closely here in Michigan.

    This morning

Goji berries were all the rage 8-10 years ago, but you don’t really see them that much anymore. I got caught up in it, and bought a really nice one only to have it die after getting knocked off the bench during a freak snowstorm back in 2017. anyway, I was lucky enough to have taken cuttings...

    Further development of JM

Well, you've got to let the tree grow vigorously then chop back every few years, do meaningful root work, all the while wiring movement into the trunk segments for movement. The fastest way to achieve that will be in the ground, and it would still be a 10-15 year project to develop the trunk...

This one finally hit its mark, moving into akadama and a real stoneware pot… and not just any stoneware pot… a vintage pot circa 2014 from @Waldo Street Pottery 😎

    Go big or go home!

My plan is to leave it alone until it heals. I may gently rub off some of the rough bark around the scar but don’t anticipate any further carving here. The wound is on the back of the tree fwiw.
