Right now, my maples are all in full sun from about 9 AM to 7 PM, but once the oak trees on the west side of my yard leaf out in a week or two, they’ll be in that spot of high shade by mid afternoon at the latest.

I suspect high/filtered shade by early afternoon is ideal, regardless of climate, assuming you're wanting those pristine blemish-free fall leaves ala @MACH5. Some kind of wind break is also helpful. I can swing the afternoon shade in my yard but the wind is another story.

I'd add soil until it's slightly higher than where the first branch leaves the main trunk.

I think your issue is possibly related to either- very heavy soil and overpotting, improper repotting (timing, overaggressive root removal), or improper overwintering. The brown spots on the trunk could be bruises secondary to trauma or due to Pseudomonas syringae... time will tell. Fwiw, I've...

I would ground layer this plant right at the graft union, scraping away all the bark and cambium down at least one inch. Apply rooting hormone above the ring of exposed wood and add more soil until the sight of the layer is covered by at least an inch. I’ve never used a wire and have been 100%...

If this were mine, I wouldn't be considering a repot at all but I would be considering either a ground layer this spring or next.

Well, you've got to let the tree grow vigorously then chop back every few years, do meaningful root work, all the while wiring movement into the trunk segments for movement. The fastest way to achieve that will be in the ground, and it would still be a 10-15 year project to develop the trunk...

My plan is to leave it alone until it heals. I may gently rub off some of the rough bark around the scar but don’t anticipate any further carving here. The wound is on the back of the tree fwiw.
