Unfortunately it did not make it. It was a slow decline over that summer and did not make the overwintering in the unheated garage.

Consider working on the pine while it remains in the ground if you want practice... clean it up, practice grafting of foliage.. practice with it in the ground and stable allows for the healthiest and strongest tree and more likely success.., having said that, research timing of all procedures...

Being in the south means you are already experiencing some heat, right? I would wait until late winter, early spring of next year... I recently did work on this type of juniper, but I live in PA and temps are still fairly cool (65-75) most days... wet and humid too, which helps with aftercare...

I like it a lot! That swirly root is crazy! I think it is probably wise to keep it like you plan... who knows what it’s conn to up top (life line that is)...

I agree with Sorce... I look at the middle branch and think it is too late thick and removing it can give better taper.

I also used drystall from SS, but they told me they no longer carry it. Superfly bonsai were great when I bought pots, so you could give them a try for pumice.
