    Collected Hemlock

My last opportunity to collect in the area I was in was yesterday so I got after it. All three of these had a nice base of fine roots which I was able to keep in tact upon collection. All potted up in a mix of 1:1:1 - perlite, turface, pine bark. Started to...

Grafting RMJ with Shimpaku (IMBEDDED PHOTOS)

I learn something new every day. Didn't know how the flow worked with regards to the cambium layer and the sapwood. Thanks for the explanation. somegeek

Mt Hemlock - how long to keep in the shade?

Thanks for the replies all - I'll get them into some sun. There are some larger images here. Bit of a discussion regarding what kind of hemlocks they are. :) somegeek

Mt Hemlock - how long to keep in the shade?

I collected these three trees a few weeks back. They've been in the shade since. I'm curious as to how soon I can start putting these into morning sun? They'd be exposed from ~8am til noon or so. Appreciate any input. somegeek

Read this thread the other night myself and was wondering the same. :)

Some new pots for your consideration

Shape and texture of #1 is nice with the blending of #3's color would be my choice... that being said I'd be happy to have any four of these. I dig the texture. somegeek

Shimpaku Pads - foliage above branch or level to mostly conceal?

Thanks for the reply. When you prune way back, are you trying to produce backbudding? Is this the latter method used here? http://kingii.blogspot.com/2010/06/83.html - images 8-10 here image somegeek

Shimpaku Pads - foliage above branch or level to mostly conceal?

When looking at images of foliage pads on Shimpaku, I've noticed that some trees have the foliage in large pads anywhere from 1/2" above the branch(exposing it) to a point where the foliage is arranged low enough to conceal the branch. What is the desired position for the foliage on the branch...

Shimpaku - small weak branches - remove or leave?

I have a tree I am currently let grow without any pruning to develop the trunk. There are about a half dozen branches which are pretty bare and leaning towards yellowish(hanging on to a little green in color). I'm curious if branches like this do much for the tree to grow the trunk or if they...

Should I wait until the spring to do any wiring on these trees? somegeek

    Collected a few yew today

Thanks for the correction on this. :) What are the notable differences when discerning between yew and hemlock foliage? somegeek

    Collected a few yew today

I had the opportunity today to collect a few small Hemlocks (corrected - thanks Ianb/JasonG). The root system on this tree was insane. It had a patch of roots roughly 1ft sq (like a moist mat of canvas) under a rock it was next to. This tree was removed from a ditch. Pruning by snowplow...

    Shimpaku - root over rock?

Nice sanity check to see others are doing this. :) I thought this was an interesting way to secure the roots. somegeek

    Shimpaku - root over rock?

Thanks for the reply, rockm. I rooted a 6" cutting earlier this year that would fit the bill here I think to start anew. somegeek

    Shimpaku - root over rock?

Thanks for the reply, Paul. Here's a few more pics. This is the groove on top on the backside where the main trunk would rest. Would the trunk grip here after a while as it grows and gets a bit pinched in there? I'd like to have this come over the top to have a small cascade...

    Shimpaku - root over rock?

I've not seen many Shimpaku root over rock plantings. Are these less common? I have a nice rock that I think would accommodate a root over rock planting nicely and I'm pondering a Shimpaku on this. There is a groove in the top about 1.5" deep that runs from the upper left to the lower right...

    Ants herding Aphids. Quite interesting.

I've taken care of my local odorous ant population using Amdro Ant Block. This stuff worked great. The first fall I used it I didn't get but a single ant inside our home. Might work for what you're trying to ward off.

Sun Exposed Black Nursery Pots - shade?

I read a bit about how heat can affect roots in black nursery pots which get heated by the sun and I'm curious how folks deal with this? I've put some of my nursery pots into the ground while in the pot but I'm curiouf if folks have other solutions? somegeek

Air Layer Rooting - when to sever?

Great - will take a look this weekend. Would I go through and trim out the brown spots on my trees? I have been watering my trees daily(started a few months ago), not soaking, but just a sprinkle to wet the foliage in the morning during the warmer summer days. Curious if this was the culprit...

Air Layer Rooting - when to sever?

Thanks for the reply and it's quite timely actually. I've seen a few tips on a few of my junipers start to brown and a Google image search of phomopsis turns up images which look very similar to what I am seeing. The brown tips I see currently are very sparse and no larger than 1/4" in...

Air Layer Rooting - when to sever?

Thanks for the reply, Gary. I went ahead and removed this layer tonight. There were little shoots poking out from most areas of the coir ball(previously noted I used moss while I used coir). I potted it up/braced it in a 50/50 bark turface mix. Went with more organic in the mix to help...
