    Extreme Heat in the Midwest

Thank you all for the helpful advice. I am sure taking most of it to heart and moving trees around. I really hope, however, that the heat would just go away, not only because of the trees, but because of ME and the bills I'm gonna have to pay for the A/C running 24/7 :(

    Extreme Heat in the Midwest

Thanks for the advice. I am conscientiously watering at every opportunity, if they need it, and did think about the shade cloth but like you, wonder which trees may not need it.

    Par boiled Rice Husks/Hulls

I've practically given up trying to find usable pine/fir bark for use in my soil mix, but did find par boiled rice husks in a usable form. I hear they don't break down as quickly as pine bark but do have excellent water retention characteristics. Here is a breakdown: PBH (Parboiled...

    Mugo Pine Progression

Thanks for the tip. Do you have a recommendation regarding what brand mycorrhiza to use? I've read that there may be many different strands for different trees.

    Mugo Pine Progression

Yes, I followed Vance's advice and re-potted in July in basically 30% Lava, 30% Turface, 20% grit and 20% pine bark. I think maybe what I did is use too much of the original soil, trying to maintain the mycorrhiza from the root ball. Do you recommend cleaning the root ball of the original soil?

    Mugo Pine Progression

Very impressive Victrinia !!! I love Mugo pines, but have killed practically every one I have tried, over-watering I think, but am not for sure. Can you share your soil mix please? Hopefully, when I dare to do another one that may help. Thanks in advance.

Don't know about the whole yard but I've had good luck with Terro. Just a few drops on the rim of the tree pot and the Borax in it is carried back to the nest. Very effective and quick

Eric ALWAYS has trees that are not posted to his website. As mentioned before, just email him with exactly what you are looking for and your price range. He and Andrea will provide pictures of possibilities. I rarely purchase trees from any other source

    Brazilian Rain Tree Goo

No, the tree had some light branch pruning but not in the areas the fungus formed. I have seen no evidence of borers and do not have any carpenter ants to my knowledge. iamurthman posted this on another forum: Hi Gandalf, this is jelly fungus, commonly known as, 'witches butter'. It is a...

    Brazilian Rain Tree Goo

With all due respect: The female has a saw-like egg-laying apparatus that she uses to cut the bark of twigs and to splinter the sapwood where she lays her eggs. The twigs of deciduous trees are the most common hosts to periodical cicadas. This type of damage is the most severe injury that...

    Brazilian Rain Tree Goo

I was just thinking--------do you think this could be from cicadas slitting the trunk/branches to lay their eggs??

    Brazilian Rain Tree Goo

Thanks for the input but in my experience,snails/slugs will only lay eggs where it s dark and moist. This tree is in 90 degree plus temperatures every day. The only moisture it gets is watering daily, and it's usually dry by that time. Do snails/slugs lay their egg in that environment?
