Mallsai, the way many are introduced to bonsai

Hi Onlyrey, How I wish we had mallsai here. You are so lucky to have such semi advanced trees available for so little money. At a nursery here you may get a so called bonsai, a stick in a bonsai pot that has been hacked to keep it small, little or no shaping for $50 Australian. If it's been...

Toward a Definition of Art and Bonsai as Art

Hi Chris, You know what? A part of me was joking and a part of me was serious. I guess I am just a little bemused by all the differing opinions on what defines good art. My point is it is such an objective thing that I wonder if it can really be defined for everyone. I think Hitler...

    Undercutting branches

Mmmm, interesting Tachici. Being a juniper may make it risky by the sounds of it. I will have to take another look and see what other options I have. If the branch dies I would have to be able to make something with what's left. Time to sit down with a beer and contemplate. Cheers, Steve.

    Undercutting branches

When undercutting a branch to bring it down, how far through the branch do you need to cut? Are there any special techniques? I am working on a juniper which has a branch that's growing up at about 45 degrees and is too thick to bring down with wire. Cheers, Steve.

    moss query

Years ago my bonsai potting mix was much more like regular garden centre potting mix. Now I am just starting to make up mixes with gravel, clay based kitty litter and pine bark. The mix I used to use I could grow moss on no problem, this new stuff is so well draining I can't seem to get moss...

Just started in on these 2....

If they were mine I'd be looking at a literati style for sure. Find as many examples in books or the internet to get inspired and have a go. Steve

    My Favorite Tree Thread

Favourite deciduous tree, well semi-deciduous depending on your climate is the Chinese Elm. Bonus is you can root prune them at almost any time and they get fantastic branch ramification. Steve :)

The biggest mistake you wished you had avoided as a beginner

My biggest mistake used to be not leaving my trees alone. I was so scared my tree was going to grow out of shape that I constantly trimmed it to the point there was no new growth. Other mistake was putting off joining a Bonsai club. Steve.

    What's The Rush?

I am guilty of putting underdone trees into Bonsai pots. Why do I do this?, lack of patience I guess. I am learning the value of patience however, and now have trees in training pots and a few in the ground, but I need to see some trees in Bonsai pots for my sanity. I know they are not there...

10 things you should know BEFORE buying a tree

    13) Seek out and join a club, if none are nearby seek out other bonsaists and form a study group. Lots of good advice. No.13 that Will suggested should be the first thing you do as a beginner if you can. A lot of the other advice listed here will well and truely be covered if you can join a...

    First Pine

Thanks Graydon, I reckon I will do as you say and let it grow and build strength, and hopefully give me some more branches to play around with. It will be good to study how these pine species do grow and react to pruning as they are a new quantity to me. Chris, Yeah I know the Casuarina...

    First Pine

Hi everyone, Never attempted a pine before so looking for some advice on what to do. Unfortunetly I got itchy fingers and have already chopped this pine, maybe I have done the wrong thing! Anyway I am unsure of the variety although I think it may be a Radiata Pine? The guy in the nursery...
