    A little barberry (I think)

My neighbor has a hedge row of these. I get them popping up in my garden all the time. So a couple years ago I decided to dig one up and give it a shot. Was just a single little branch sticking up. Pretty much grew itself into a cascade style, I just did a little shaping on it the other day. It...

    New Larch..first shot at wiring...

Picked this up yesterday. Suggestions, critiques?..besides getting rid of the dead branch on the right. After cutting, the tree is 20" tall.

    First time shaping a tree..Azalea. How'd I do?

Bought this azalea at Lowes 2 years ago. Put in a box and let it grow out a couple years. Finally got up the nerve to cut it back and "style" it a few weeks ago. Probably could have cut back further on the branches but was hesitant to cut back too far. It's already starting to put out new...

    Indoor grow light height

I've been using two T-8 double bulb fixtures and have had great success. No grow lights, just your basic household bulbs. 1 warm, 1 cool in each. Maybe 12-18 inches or so above the trees. I have two Jades under them now overwintering and they are doing great. I kept my firethorn under them for...

Been away from the board for a while....

Been away from the board quite a while. Lost my beautiful wife Jo, to cancer Dec 27th. Was at her bedside holding her hand as she passed. A few of the members may remember from my discussing her treatments, insurance etc. I have been keeping up the hobby though. Started a few projects this year...

My Barberry I took out of my muclh this year.

A little wayward Barberry decided to plant itself in my roses this year. So I thought why not try to do something with it. I think it looks like it has a decent shape to start with. The colors on this in fall were spectacular. Wish I took pics. The reds and oranges were some of the brightest...

My quince from seed this year.

My neighbor up here in NY has a few Quince bushes growing in his hedges. They have peach/pink colored flowers. So last year (2011) I took seeds from the fruit and let them freeze over the winter on my back porch. I planted them in the spring and had some pretty good luck. Would have had a few...

    When to prune.....?

Thanks...Could have used that article back in June or so. I root pruned and repotted my Firethorn and didn't know that I was also supposed to prune the tree itself too. Darn shame. Had it for 5 years or so and was getting to the point where it would get full of berries. It never came back, it's...

The one I'm asking about is a Cotoneaster. The leaves have changed to fall colors and are beginning to drop.

    When to prune.....?

I just brought my two trees into an unheated porch for the winter. They'll get some light but not much direct light. When would I prune them? Now over the winter or in the Spring?

Thx....Ended up doing a Tr-Tip. First time trying one. I could never find them around here, finally found a place that carries them. Did it on my little Smokey Joe.

    When to bring in trees?

Judy..The Azalea and Cottoneaster are both cold hardy varieties sold at Lowes around here as outdoor inground plants. Just not sure if they will be as hardy in bonsai soil in a box. Just checked, I'm in zone 5b.

    When to bring in trees?

Going to be keeping my Cottoneaster and Azalea in an unheated enclosed back porch, which gets some sun. When should I bring them in? Also since I've never had outdoor trees that I was "wintering", what is recommended as far as watering goes?

    What's Cookin'?

I'll be firing up the smoker today. Probably just some wings for me and my son. I get 10 pounds for $10. About 60-70 wings. They'll last today and tomorrow. WING SAUCE 3 TBS butter, melted 4 TBS hot pepper sauce (Frank's Original) 1 TBS paprika 1 tsp cayenne pepper 1 tsp sugar 1/2 tsp...

Did I over do the root prune on my Firethorn?

Don't think my Firethorn survived the root prune and repotting. Lots of brown dried up leaves no new grow. I just moved some soil around and didn't see any new root sprouts either. Is it a good bet that I killed it?

    Cotoneaster haircut...Have a question.

I'm surprised..I took three of the cuttings from the tree and put them in potting soil. Darn things have already put out roots. I've tried quite a few times with my Firethorn and never had any luck. Go figure.

Did I over do the root prune on my Firethorn?

Looks like it's going to drop it's leaves. Is that normal after a root pruning?
