The best plant for bonsai in the world.......

I love junipers, doesn't matter which variety, every one should have in their collection at least one. My collection was 50% juniper. So easy to take care of, so forgiving. All you have to do in my climate is spray for spider mites, not much else bothers them. They are probably one of the first...

Let me say, I'm passionate about the War between the states....

Actually American history in general. Chancellorville, the second bloodiest single day battle in the war. Chancellorville, Wilderness and Spotsyvania were three seperate battles, but in reality they were one long running battle, Grant withdrawing from one battle to lure Lee into better...

Deer Season a Half Century Ago

Deer Season a Half Century Ago By Paul Kengor This week hunters across America storm the woods loaded for deer. For yet another indication of how times have changed, consider this account of deer season a half century ago: My mother’s family lived in Emporium, Pennsylvania, as did...

    Return to the 50's hobby....

About 20 years ago, I decided to return to my childhood, so I decided to take a break from restoring cars and restore some toys. On the scooters , Whizzers and Schwinn bicycles I did all the work but the chrome plating and recovering the seats. I did about three times this many, but I would have...

Other hobbies you have enjoyed are still enjoying now.......

My whole life I've enjoyed having hobbies, some I know longer do because of age. I loved all of these at one time of another, the problem is I can't just do something halfway, it's all or nothing. Golf, tennis, restoring antique cars, building street rods, restoring Schwinn bicycles and Whizzer...

    Stones for sale.......

I have a large stone collection for sale, I need the room. The problem, it's to heavy to ship in todays climate. If some would want to pick them up, I would sell for 25 cents on the dollar. Harry

Some bonsai advice from experience for a noob........

Books are good learning tools, but they can only take you so far, magazines are great for looking at beautiful trees to inspire you, but, If you can't swim, I could give you a book on how to swim, but if I took you out in the middle of a lake and threw you overboard, you would drown. Get involved...

Another hobby I've had for 16 years....

I keep show koi in my backyard pond. It's 5000 gals. with 12 VERY large Japanese koi. If you think bonsai are trying sometimes, keep koi. My koi are all females, just like in the real world, they are more desirable than males because they have prettier shaped bodies (TRUE). The Japanese looking...

PLEASE.. let me offer some advice.......

If you are new to bonsai, this is the best advice I can offer you. Find a club or someone that has been doing bonsai for a few years, I will gurantee you they have killed more trees than they have alive (ask to see their pot collection). Ask the person or club what will not just grow, but what...

    A hard lesson I've learned......

In bonsai "one size fits all" doesn't apply. When repotting and root pruning, be aware of your climate conditons. When someone demonstrates how to root prune, be sure you know their location. In Oklahma, I can't root prune as hard as someone in Michigan. I have to have the largest rootball...

My 2 cents worth for what's it's worth.....

I see newbies and people that have a little bonsai experience already buy those little S curve Chinese elms for 35 to 55 bucks and higher. In about 8 to 10 years, they will have a larger S curve Chinese elm. I'm sure I will have people disagree with me and that's a good thing, because we want to...

OK, how about a little bonsai...

This grafted California Juniper I bought from Jim Gremel in 2008, it was styled by Marco in April 2009. The current picture I took today just to show it's filling in nicely, actually faster than I hoped. So anyone east of California that can grow junipers, don't hesitate to buy one, thay do fine...

The perils of rasing bonsai in Oklahoma...

I lose a least one tree every year in Oklahoma, especially the smaller ones, and sometimes a big one. This is my sad story. I do everything possible I can do do to see they stay healthy, watering twice a day, misting several times a day, fertilizing when watering, fertilizing when misting...

    My RMJ

When I first stated bonsai, like most everyone, I though I could grow anything..wrong, I paid my dues, I killed three JWP's before I quit. I love Amercan yamadori conifers so, I bought an RMJ and my friend Kirby told me to leave it alone for a couple years, right. I worked on it the first year...
