Thanks guys. It has a LOT of backbudding since all I did last year was baby it (and the other two I bought), fertilize, and plan. I'm sure it will look good eventually once I have a chance to chase the foliage back toward the trunk and reduce the length of some of those upper branches. Sadly...

A really nice native tree that's comparable to Ezo is Engelmann Spruce. Randy Knight has quite a few for sale every year, and Michael definitely knows them well.

Michael Hagedorn has a few of them. If you could possibly come down to Portland and take a class or two from him I think that would be the most benefit to you. Just contact him through his website and see what he has available. I've done a spruce with him, and he's awesome.

Jeremy, it sounds like you're doing everything right as far as fertilizing goes, but switching to an inorganic substrate for soil might be better (akadama/pumice). Slip-potting this at any time of year should not be a problem, just make sure to leave the roots completely alone and have lots...

Grimmy, this one is just a plain old Japanese Maple. Shishigashira have MUCH smaller leaves that are pretty much always curled. It's named Shi because it has four trunks (shi is 4 in Japanese). The shari is actually the old tree in the middle that died long ago, and all other trunks grow out...
