    CALLING ALL PAINTERS

I need a custom painting/scroll for an upcoming show! I have always used Susanne Barrymore for custom paintings, and Jonathan Maples for the scroll mounting, but for some reason I cannot get a hold of Susanne (I hope she's OK). Attached is what I'm looking for; 1 or 3 bats flying across a...

    WARREN HILL JAPANESE MAPLE CLUMP

Oh man, that's disappointing! I actually considered buying that pot for a maple clump of my own ;) A buddy of mine worked at UPS and they would literally THROW boxes across the warehouse to one another on a daily basis. This of course ended up in many crashing sounds of broken pottery, but...

    New Spruce

it's about 30" tall, but is an engelmann spruce. The needles aren't quite as small as Ezo, but they're comparable.

    New Spruce

Uncovered some interesting basal flare and movement, plus it's got a new pot :)

Advice and Opinions on New Trident Maple Purchase

I second the air layer idea. This way you're not wasting any of your expensive purchase ;)

2016 Shohin Seminar - California Shohin Society

I'll be there Saturdy morning for sure. Sprung for a super swanky Santa Nella hotel room at the Quality Inn ;) I'll be the bearded young hipster looking guy spending too much money...

    New Spruce

No work done to the fallen soldier. I do all my work on the species in late fall/winter, and I was spending the summer letting it gain strength. The saddest part was it was COVERED in new buds, then it just gave up...

    New Spruce

Oops, I never mentioned the species. All three of the spruces I bought from Randy are Collected Engelmann.

    New Spruce

Thanks guys. It has a LOT of backbudding since all I did last year was baby it (and the other two I bought), fertilize, and plan. I'm sure it will look good eventually once I have a chance to chase the foliage back toward the trunk and reduce the length of some of those upper branches. Sadly...

    New Spruce

OK! Finally spent some time on this one. After about ten minutes of working on it though, it became quite apparent that I had not wired a tree in almost a YEAR! That's far too long... I'm not entirely happy with the result either, so once this guy goes into a pot next month, I'll be...

I NEED one of these collected hemlock groups...

http://crataegus.com/ These are so beautiful straight from the dirt it's incredible. I actually visited Michael's nursery a couple months ago and had a chance to see them in person. They are truly spectacular. I love spruce, and these hemlocks are close to the feelings that spruce give me.

2016 Shohin Seminar - California Shohin Society

Woohoo! I somehow got the time off, so I'll be there! And most likely spend far too much money... Anyone else going?

    Japanese maple [#01]

I think the new pot choice is going to be great. I love the more rustic look with that awesome patina. Wonderful tree as well of course ;)

    New Spruce

Hey Vance. Yeah, I should have taken better before pictures in front of a neutral background as I usually do, but I was lazy and it was raining and I didn't feel like setting up my indoor stuff... I haven't begun wiring yet, just removed a few lower branches, so there's still a chance I might...

    New Spruce

Picked this one up at Randy Knight's in October of 2014, and it's time for some styling! Here are a few before pictures to get us started, with finished first styling to come later this week. It's about 30" tall with a 2.5" trunk and subtle movement. The plan is informal upright/literati...

    Ezo spruce

A really nice native tree that's comparable to Ezo is Engelmann Spruce. Randy Knight has quite a few for sale every year, and Michael definitely knows them well.

    Ezo spruce

Michael Hagedorn has a few of them. If you could possibly come down to Portland and take a class or two from him I think that would be the most benefit to you. Just contact him through his website and see what he has available. I've done a spruce with him, and he's awesome.

    I Spy....

I win! In my early days I always wanted to tattoo my favorite trees on myself, so I imagine as in that situation, the tree came BEFORE the pot.

    Crab Issues

Jeremy, it sounds like you're doing everything right as far as fertilizing goes, but switching to an inorganic substrate for soil might be better (akadama/pumice). Slip-potting this at any time of year should not be a problem, just make sure to leave the roots completely alone and have lots...

Fall Color of "Shi" - my 4 trunk Japanese Maple

Grimmy, this one is just a plain old Japanese Maple. Shishigashira have MUCH smaller leaves that are pretty much always curled. It's named Shi because it has four trunks (shi is 4 in Japanese). The shari is actually the old tree in the middle that died long ago, and all other trunks grow out...
