    The Hobbit Bag End

That’s pretty cool. Plus I love LOTR. I hope over time the canopy grows to give the impression of a broad spreading tree which is how I imagine bag end in my head.. thank for sharing.

Setting secondary structure and starting refinement

I usually do really large cuts or chops in Late spring/ summer where I am. It gives time to heal big wounds before winter. Only on vigorous trees. Any kind of pruning can be done around this time really. Fall time is when I do most of my structural pruning again avoiding large wounds on...

    NTM Azalea progress thread

Yes. You are exactly right. It will take cleaning out and drying really well before treating. I am a woodworker and keep different viscosity super glues around for different purposes. The very thin waterlike one is the one to use when seeking deep penetration. Dry wood will soak it up readily...

What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

Picked up these 3 bonsai over the weekend. Still feeling super stoked.. The forest is very inspiring and is a joy to have in the garden. The forest is trident maple The other 2 are a pyracantha and an azalea. The latter will need rebuilding as they suffered from die back, sadly. But both have...

    NTM Azalea progress thread

Just picked this up Last weekend. Had some branches die back with previous owner. But a decent price sucked me in and now its in my garden. Its budding back well so will just let it get healthy and will begin to work on it when its strength allows. The trunk is rotted out and dead wood will...

    Older imported pyracantha progress thread

Just bought this last weekend. Its my first pyracantha. Not overly familiar with the species but potential of the trunk lines drew me in. its had some die back of branches but I was unable to find out the cause. its bouncing back already and my understanding is pyracantha bud back well when...

    Mature Trident maple Forest

Ya I feel ya. Or I always have till a few days ago.. at least. Make sure to join any local clubs to you. I think if I had done that along time ago something like this would have been way more possible. Also any sellers or gardens around you that keep bonsai… let them know you’re on the hunt...

    Mature Trident maple Forest

Yes. It definitely needs some trimming of the upper canopy. As there are some thick branches in the apex areas of the individual trees. Was hoping to do it in late spring while still leafless. It’s a bit difficult to see clearly and make those decisions now. I willl study it in winter and...

    Repotting Season Questions??

If you are looking to grow these out to get more size or girth then most any free draining soil mix will work . Search this site as there are countless threads on soil mixes. You don't really need expensive custom mixes till you get closer to finished trees. With respect to repotting I like...

What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

Grabbed this today. Cork elm pre bonsai. Root flare is about 7 inches wide. Trunk is about 4 inches thick. Great bark on it. I will be cutting this down come mid summer if it grows well till then. I'll look to create some taper by chopping down to a lower branch to start a new apex. . Would...

Taiwanese Deciduous Bonsai at 2021 Hwa-fong.

I think that I have come to the opinion that Taiwanese Deciduous Bonsai Surpass Japanese Deciduous trees in a few ways., at least as represented at this show compared to the Kokufu exhibitions I have seen. I find the Taiwanese trees to be much more natural representations of miniature trees in...

Awesome video on root pruning plums and maples

Yep. I liked this a lot too. I wish more growers and hobbyists understood these practices. The vast majority of bonsai developed and sold in the US have really bad rootage /nebari. Finding a tree with really great rootage here is so rare. Seems like most of us don’t understand how to treat...

Prostrata grafted with Itoigawa: progression Thread

Not much different really. The main thing was actual technique as follows. Last time the way I placed the scions was probably not giving me the most likelihood of mating cambial layers. This year I tried different angles to see which might work better. Last year I tightened the living crap out...

Prostrata grafted with Itoigawa: progression Thread

Setting up a new progression thread for this Juniper. Hoping to track its progress through the years. Bought this out of a wholesale landscape nursery cuz. it had some interesting movement many years back. Then about 12 years ago I added the deadwood by using the Taiwanese technique of pulling...

    American Hornbeam forest

Awesome progression and Great development over time! I really love the composition.. tho if I’m picking nits.. it feels to me that the branches on the far left and right of the forest could extend a bit making it wider a bit. Great job and thanks for posting your beautiful forest..

Design and Progression Thread: California Juniper with grafted Shimpaku

Have had this for many years. Along with the rest of my collection this languished in the yard for around a decade due to various unavoidable reasons. During the beginning of Covid Life finally turned around and I am now able to spend lots of time developing my trees. During those years I kept...

    Cost efficiencies of mixes

Totally agree. Same goes for akadama. I wouldn’t be my planting my deciduous in 100% Akadama either. Let alone my conifers or any plants that like to stay on the dry side. DE and akadama are too water retentive to be used alone. Both also break down with time so I like another particle Or 2...

Which tool do you use to create jin and shari

I If the wood is green I tend not the carve but pull fibers to create Shari. I tend to use needle nose pliers . But I do have gouges. I will still try to pul the fibers vs cutting them. It creates a way more natural looking dead wood when you can do it.
