The passing of a formative Bonsai Artist (Vance Wood)

Ah yes Jim was another one that could be cranky but a good guy that knew his stuff! I remember him from the old IBC days back in the late 90’s early 2k.

    Overlooked Species?

A little reading shows that they used to be in genus acacia. They grow fast once germinated which is a plus over Texas ebony. They are adaptable to both dry and humid climates, the wood does not rot and they take to pruning well. I would get rid of the taproot in your seedlings asap.

If you ever get an extra, I’d like to try it. Maybe I’ll have something to trade.

    For the advanced seasoned bonsaist...

About 25 years, oldest that I still have is a Vitex agnus-castus about 8 years with me. It was in a foster home for about 4 of those years when I lost custody of all my remaining trees. LOL, you know the story by now. It's back home that's what matters.

The passing of a formative Bonsai Artist (Vance Wood)

This has been a tough month so far. My dad and Vance passing just days apart... So much could be said about Vance! Salty and cranky? Yep sometimes but always on the money! We all know Vance was the mugo whisperer but many forget perhaps his biggest contribution to bonsai for which he held a...

    Help with parrots beak

Update because I’ve treated mine poorly for the past 5 years. I now leave them outside until about 32F. I allow it to go completely deciduous and dormant from about late November and it is waking up as we speak. I might be a little more careful next year as I had just a little die back below 32...

Do some research on repotting before you jump in. They have a bit of a reputation for being touchy. Beautiful though and if you nail it please tell how it's done!

He has long been a hero of mine. When I was fairly new I naturally asked him for advice on repotting evergreen oaks. He was so gracious and kind. People that are at the apex of a field and are humble and gentle teachers are a rare and precious jewel. He’s one.
