    Gnarly cherry in gnarly pot

So I found this burl on the side of the road. From the other side - burned out. Looks like a planting opportunity to me. Maybe not a permanent one, but the fire will stabilize it for some time.

BrianBay9 Acorn to Oak Tree Thread

Started with four species, valley oak, Englemann oak, interior live oak and canyon live oak. I think. Identifying many of California oaks is guesswork as far as I'm concerned. The cage is to discourage the tree rats.

Note to Potters - Make feet on big pots taller than fingers are thick

I volunteer at a permanent collection that tends to inherit big trees as people get too old to manage them. I'm one of the few volunteers without back problems or hip problems etc who can still lift 100 lbs at one end of a huge pot. So me and one other guy tend to do the heavy lifting. I...

    Fresno club sale Sierra juniper

I picked up this juniper at the Fresno club sale today for it's minimum bid price of $300. I thought that was a steal! Initial styling by Todd Schlafer. Best part is that as a volunteer at the Clark collection I can bring this back in every so often to get lots of expert advice on its...

GSBF Clark Collection in Fresno - my first volunteer day

Had my first volunteer day at the Clark collection in Fresno. We spend the morning changing out the exhibit - the springtime maple budding is over and an new set of trees going out. Some of these are newly exhibited trees, and some are behind the scenes shots. None had a particularly good...

    Anyone here from Fresno?

Looks like I'll be moving from the cool, foggy Central California coast, to Fresno, California, land of triple digit summers. I'm considering which of my trees I should sell or donate before I go. I'm sure my native oaks, ficus and olives will be fine, even improve with the heat. Elms...

Shout out for Vicki Chamberlain, American potter

I was unaware of Vicki Chamberlain until this year. Maybe everyone else already knows her, but I picked up a couple of her pots at the Santa Nella event in October, and then met her at her booth at the Pacific Expo today. Check out her pots here https://earthwares.org/galleries/ High...

    It's Pyracantha day

Since Pyracantha grow essentially all year round here, I can get a jump on my early winter cleaning and pruning with these guys. Berries are getting a bit past their prime. First up, cascade.

Tough year for local coast live oaks

The drought has stressed the local coast live oak forest for sure, but now we've had a massive crop of oak moth larvae. Much of my local forest looks like this: That's an evergreen oak! In a normal year the oak moth damage is just cosmetic. I'm worried this year will be different.

    Tree ID help

Anyone know this one. Seems to be subtropical, evergreen, flowers at the end of branches only. Grows like a weed. Buds back readily when pruned. About 20 ft tall. Two were in my landscape when I arrived, but I haven't seen them in local nurseries. I just air layered a couple of starts. It...

    Urea to ammonia

I prefer to use ammonia based fertilizers since the nitrogen is immediately available to the trees. Urea based ferts need to be broken down by microbial action to produce ammonia and/or nitrates. BUT, urea based ferts like Miracle Grow are easier to find and usually cheaper. So I'm taking...

    Santa Cruz Bonsai mini-show

We've started doing mini-shows twice a year since COVID shut down our normal annual show site. Nothing big, space for 15 - 20 trees. But we're seeing some pretty nice trees! These are from yesterday. I showed a cascade pyracantha, unfortunately about a week past it's prime for flowers. Hard...
