Bonsai by the Monestary in GA worth a visit?

Loved my visit to Bonsai by the Monestary. The location and the grounds really gave me a different feel than most bonsai places that I have visited.

Which of these boxwoods have the most potential

Thanks for all the replies. I feel like the last two might have gotten a bad rap because of the photos that I took. You can't really see it in the photos, but these have much larger trunks than the first one. So here's a new angle for both of them. Do these change any opinions?

Which of these boxwoods have the most potential

I've had some "Morris Midget" boxwoods growing for a few years now and have decided that I need to start deciding what to do with them. I originally got them to do some live oak style trees. Here's 3 that I have chosen to start work on. Which do you think have the most potential?

    "Live oak" Boxwood

Thanks, I think my other question has to do with when to prune. Mine just had a flush of new growth, but they do this 2 or 3 times per year. I'm never sure when to start cutting back since in my climate they don't seem to go dormant at the times when other trees are.

    "Live oak" Boxwood

I have several Morris Midget boxwoods that I am trying to train in this style. Do you prune branches back to one, two pairs of leaves? What time of year do you do it? Guide wires for training? Just like to know more about your process.

    World Class Bonsai without Wiring?

Humans are 100x more refined and manicured today as well, doesn't really mean we are better, just different.

    World Class Bonsai without Wiring?

If this thread is correct, I would wonder why we have become so dependent on wire. Was wire available in the early days of bonsai in Japan and China? Will wire be readily available in the future when metal resources dwindle? It just makes me wonder where the art has come from and where it...

    A good "Southern" aggregate component?

This is what I do as well. I can only find time to water once a day, so my mixes have to hold water in 100 degree heat in July. That's the tough thing about Mississippi, you have to create a mix that will survive 100 degree dry summers, and raining every day sometimes for two weeks winters. A...

    A good "Southern" aggregate component?

No, I have went out there a couple of times and it has been closed. I connected with MSGCBS at a garden show last weekend. They told me Turface and Haydite, but I am not sure where I could get Haydite either, but I'm going to Day of Bonsai in Mobile in a couple of weeks and I'm going to talk...

    A good "Southern" aggregate component?

About 2:30 to Sweetwater, not something I would want to have to do every year. There are other farm supply stores in the surrounding area, so I'm going to make some calls.

Anyone ever try Sassafras as bonsai?

I'd love to hear your findings if you do try. I dug up a couple last year and the root systems were terrible. I wasn't going to try them for bonsai, I just wanted to move them from their current spot to another spot in the yard. They didn't even last a month. They apparently grow in clumps...

    A good "Southern" aggregate component?

No Dry Stall, only Stall Dry (powder from diatomaceous earth), only big bags of chicken grit was oyster shell, decomposed granite was in 5lb bags at $8.99 a bag. They are hoping to get in some pigeon grit in a 50lb. bag this week that I want to take a look at (still double the price of...

    Brussel's Trip

Seems like lots more trees on the grounds than when I went there in December a couple of years ago (although I was still overwhelmed with the greenhouses full of trees). Going right before Rendezvous must be a great time to go.

    A good "Southern" aggregate component?

I'm going to take my list to the farm supply store tomorrow morning. I'll try to post my findings. I also might go to a nursery to see what they can order if anything.

    A good "Southern" aggregate component?

Thanks, I'm going to try to go to the local farm supply and ask for Dry Stall or Grani-Grit. The oyster shells is what I think they said they had the last time I asked, which I knew I didn't want. It's a frustrating conversation because they kept asking what I wanted it for and when I told...

    A good "Southern" aggregate component?

Well, the problem that Poink88 describes is what I have observed as well. I can actually see all the water heading to one or two areas on the pot as if it were storm drains. If I did stick with Turface, I'd need to learn how to prevent this problem. Mixing it with perlite may be the answer...

    A good "Southern" aggregate component?

I can look into the Napa Floor Dry. I can't find decomposed granite at local stores. I tried at the farm supply and they just looked at me like I was crazy. Chicken grit is one of those things that I would like to see a picture of to match it up. I think what goes for chicken grit...

    A good "Southern" aggregate component?

Right now I use Turface which was fairly easy for me to get and cheap. Two things that I really look for in a soil. I would like to experiment with other components at this point though. I read about lava chips, akadama, river rock, zeolite, and the list goes on, but I can't find anything at...

    Plant city bonsai...superb packaging

Your probably about as close as I am, about a 9 hour drive for me. I'd really like to attend some of the workshops he offers. If I were closer though, I would definitely be in marriage counseling

    Plant city bonsai...superb packaging

We go on vacations near there every few years and I have to stop every time we go (with my wife patiently waiting in the car). I always end up buying something and I always end up wishing I lived closer so I had more time to look.

    Chickasaw Plum Pre-bonsai

Nice, I have one of these in a grow bed, so I'd be interested in updates. I also didn't know they were so hard to repot, I may consider going ahead and moving it out of the grow bed and into a grow pot.

    Japanese Maple Potensai?

No, I don't, sorry. What your seeing is about the first 2 feet or so. As far as the cultivar, the tag simply said Japanese Maple. It has green leaves that are smaller than my other JM's in the yard.

    Japanese Maple Potensai?

Thanks for the advice. I could leave it for another year, since I don't have a replacement for it right now, so I may try that. If I remember correctly, I planted it on a tile so I'm thinking that will help some with the downward root growth.

    Japanese Maple Potensai?

I planted this tree about 3 years ago in my yard and now my wife wants it gone because the growth on the top is really ugly. I am not sure exactly why, but it shot up about 3 feet in one growing season as if it had gotten a lot of nitrogen even though I wasn't adding anything to it. The trunk...
