Which of these boxwoods have the most potential

I've had some "Morris Midget" boxwoods growing for a few years now and have decided that I need to start deciding what to do with them. I originally got them to do some live oak style trees. Here's 3 that I have chosen to start work on. Which do you think have the most potential?

    A good "Southern" aggregate component?

Right now I use Turface which was fairly easy for me to get and cheap. Two things that I really look for in a soil. I would like to experiment with other components at this point though. I read about lava chips, akadama, river rock, zeolite, and the list goes on, but I can't find anything at...

    Japanese Maple Potensai?

I planted this tree about 3 years ago in my yard and now my wife wants it gone because the growth on the top is really ugly. I am not sure exactly why, but it shot up about 3 feet in one growing season as if it had gotten a lot of nitrogen even though I wasn't adding anything to it. The trunk...

Would you use these Japanese Maples?

I've had these two trees for a few years with the intention of using them for a bonsai project one day. I've read some things lately though that led me to believe that the grafts on these trees on just too high and they won't make great material. Would you agree? Tree 1: Tree 2:

A better look at my juniper?

I cut all the major branches that were growing upward off of any side branches from the main trunk (most of the them anyway) to get a better look at the branch structure. After staring at it for a few days, it still hasn't come to me where I should take this tree (or where this tree is going to...

Need to cut a pro nana back

I have a pro nana that I bought at a nursery a couple of years ago with the intention of doing a spreading live oak style with it. Besides repotting, I haven't done much to it during those 2 years. Last October, I thinned the branches to let a bit more light into the canopy, but I need to do...

    A list of woody plants?

I am looking for a list (preferably text or close to it) of scientific names and common names for woody plants. Something along the lines of the same plants that would exist in Dirr's Manual of Woody Landscape Plants. Anyone know of anything like this? I've done several internet searches and...

Your Guide to Creating Stands and Benches (need reviews)

I have some cheaply made benches for my bonsai, but I'm looking to make it look a bit more professional since the current comments that I get from my visitors are along the lines of "What is that?". Anyone read this book...

Ordered Turface, and I got Turface

Instead of the larger clay particles, I basically got what looks like sand. Anyone know of some use I can make of the 50 lb. bag that I now own of this? http://turface.com/turface-products/infield-conditioners/turface-quick-dry

    Tree bleeds black

I've got a red maple that I purchased to do a trunk chop. It had a really bad spot about 36 inches up the trunk where the bark had rotted out because of what they had used to keep the tree stable at the nursery. I had intended on waiting to prune it till at least it lost all of it's leaves...

    Acid-lovers

I'm having trouble sorting something out. With acid-loving plants, they need a lower PH to be able to extract nutrients from the soil. If they are getting all of their nutrients from a fertilizer (as in a 100% turface application), do they still need a low PH soil?

What to do with this parsonii?

I posted this at another forum, but no one ever said you shouldn't get a second opinion. I planted this parsonii juniper last year in my yard and was going to give it some time to grow. I'm moving now and trying to consider what's worth taking and what isn't. This juniper is in consideration...

    Let's try this again

I had lost most of that initial bonsai enthusiasm and was just watering/feeding most of my trees on a daily basis and moving on. This juniper project though has just stuck in my mind for the entire week though and I can't stand that I screwed it up. I need to learn how to see lines in trees...

    Need some styling help

I posted this over at BT and didn't get much help. Not sure why. Just got this juniper and would like to make a informal upright style out of it. I'll take any advice given, I've already did some pruning to open it up. Back?: After initial pruning to get rid of branches...

    Some suggestions

I would like to make some suggestions for this forum based on my own forum experiences, and what I would like to see in bonsai forums in general (but can't find). I have no interest right now in creating my own bonsai forum and think the administration here is the most open to new ideas. I...

    Name this boxwood variety

This is some sort of dwarf boxwood variety. I have looked around, but from what I can tell, boxwood varieties are hard to ID. These trees are about 6-8 inches high. All the nursery could tell me is that they have had them for a long time and won't be ordering them again because they grow so slowly.

Washing the leaves on indoor bonsai?

How do you give your plants a bath? I've read where people suggest putting them in the shower, but I think my shower is going to be a little hard. Would you suggest just sticking them out in the rain when it rains?
