Japanese beetle invasion - threat to bonsai ?

I have used Safer Soap spray on the beetles with success. It does kill them and seems to repel them for a week. So spraying the trees they like (J. quince) every week keeps them away.

Has anyone seen the movie The Fountain?

I did see that movie and it was pretty good. And the tree was interesting.

new nana .. what to do

I would remove all of that long cascading truck/branch, right where the trunk makes the 90° bend. This would leave only the vertical part of the trunk. Then grow the tree from that one small branch that is pointing straight up.

    Pinyon pines

I have had a Pinyon for two years now. This was collected by the guys at Oregon Bonsai about 4 years ago. So far it has done quite well here in the east. Only trouble has been Pine Tip bores. Here it is after its first styling.

    New Juniper...

Yea, what happened to all those nice white tipped roots? I don't think any roots should have been cut off. They only needed to be tucked into the pot. Hope it lives as it quite nice looking at the new planting angle.

    Pumice vs lava rock.

My limited experience is with yamadori from Oregon Bonsai (Walter Pall's trees at Nature's Way) that I bought planted in pure pumice. I repoted two, a Ponderosa and a small RMJ, both had a tremendous amount of new roots when pulled out of the Johnson flats. Also the pumice was reuse when they...

    Wild Shimpaku

I like it. I agree that letting the jin suggest the harshness of seasonal winds is much better than an obviousness windsweep. Much like many of the trees found in the high western mountains. Thanks for posting.

    New Mugo

Now is a good time to do root work on Mugos. I bare rooted one three weeks ago and another three years ago in July. Both are doing fine. See Vance Wood's Mugo article here: http://mababonsai.org/pages/wood_mugho1.html Good find for four dollars. Its a bit leggy but you can get back budding to...

    Rocky Mountain Juniper Raft

Ah...I was thinking of the other 'raft' RMJ that WP has at Nature's Way. Anyway you do have a nice piece of material. I do remember you since you came from Toronto and got the award for driving the furthest. Yep, I had the Poderosa that I repotted into a round mica and the little RJM. The...

    Rocky Mountain Juniper Raft

I was at that workshop and do remember that tree. Very unique. I also suggest just think about and do some sketches of the trunk and major branches to start getting ideas. Maybe treat it as a forest planting with multiply apexes. That may bring out the raft feeling more. Then bring it back next...

    plastic tent

For cuttings in 4" pots I put a gallon sized freezer bag over the cuttings and pot. It is open at the bottom to allow drainage but helps keep the humidity high at the cutting. I'll remove and water every few days. Anything can be used. If the pot is larger you could make a wire frame and cover...

JBP Seedlings - Candle or not

I wired mine in early spring, before the buds start to move when they where repotted. To bend the trunks wire when it is recommended to wire JBP. To have the wire bite in, this growth takes place in the late spring/summer.

    Where to find deadwood material?

I wonder if drift wood would work (after some soaking to remove salt). The Oregon coast has tons of great drift wood in places, might be some on the California coast.

JBP Seedlings - Candle or not

Worry later...??? Now that it has been pointed out I'll probably let both grow for a few years then remove one and let the other continue growing. Or one this these may become the future trunk.

JBP Seedlings - Candle or not

Ok, here are some of the seedlings I have. I don't claim this is the best way to develop them just what I did and how they responded. Any comments and suggestions are welcome. The first two year old seedlings from Brent at Evergreen Garden works as I received them. The second are from seed...

JBP Seedlings - Candle or not

Great links John, I have heard that Brent and Bob made some JBP videos but hadn't seen them yet (I'll watch them in detail tonight). Thanks for clarifying my questions Juniperus. JBP Seedlings - Candle or not

Chris' articles are good and was my beginning on growing JBP seedlings. After the second year my seedlings didn't have any lower branches so in late winter, going into the third year, I cut off last years shoots leaving needles below. They responded by popping buds all up and down the trunk...

    Tree with snow-knee

I've have seen several yamadori pines with 'snow knees'. Most showed signs that a top (trunk) had died off at the sharp bend and a branch became the new trunk, they have the remains of a jin at the bend. So to develop a 'nursery' pine in this form chop off the trunk above the first branch and...
