    Morris Midget Prebonsai

I put mine in my basement window well during winter. It stays between 45F and 32F all winter. I have a clear window well cover so it gets enough light as well.

    mugo pine white bud

Yes, now that you mention it, I can see how it could get reverse taper rather quickly. I guess it is a bit too late this year to work on but I will definitely heed to your advise when I work on it next summer. I will have to figure out what I want to keep and remove the rest. I am looking to...

    mugo pine white bud

I have been basically only been removing a branch or two each year on my white bud to be on the safe side as well. I have time and am in no hurry. Besides having a few extra branches on it will help it thicken the trunk a bit faster.

    mugo pine white bud

That is interesting. Basically remove one of the two sides and re pot on a new angle. I can see that progressing into something nice in a few years. My question is, would not removing half the foliage on a dwarf species cause a high likely hood that it may not survive? I have read that this...

I do my best work while PUI. At least I think I do until I see it the next day.

    Desert rose as bonsai

The Desert Rose is more or less a succulent. I have mine in 100% NAPA #8822 Floor Dry and only water it once a week. It is not a "traditional" bonsai species. I cannot see why it cannot be made one though. The roots are thick and fleshy so it may take a couple of root prunes to get it into a...

    Be careful with Turface!

What you need to do is rake the surface of the Turface from time to time. The top can get crusty for whatever reasons (i.e. organic fertilizers, hard water deposits, etc.) and not allow the water to properly penetrate, kind of like what happens with moss in a sense. I just gently stir up the...

    New Colorado spruce

Well, you are a few years away but I can see something similiar to Vance Wood's spruce. Something to start your creative juices flowing. I really like what he did with his. http://bonsainut.com/forums/showthread.php?t=197&highlight=colorado+blue+spruce

    Humic acid fertilizers

wormsway.com has a few fertilizers that contain humic acid. Here are 2 that I have been using this year with real good results: http://www.wormsway.com/detail.asp?sku=PMBG400# http://www.wormsway.com/detail.asp?sku=PMAP400

    Collecting. With or without permission?

I have been very tempted to snag an Oak seedling by my parent's house in (ironically) Oak Forest, but have not done so because it is on forest preserve property. I mean one side of me says that there are thousands of such seedlings growing everywhere in the forest, what difference would it be if...

    Shortage of pre-bonsai stock?

I have bought from both Brent at evergreengardenworks and John at greenthumbbonsai and you cannot go wrong with either one. They are both first class sellers.

    Freshly collected White Pine

Thanks for sharing that article. The Pinus Strobus is one of the most common native pines where I live in Illinois. I remember reading that they the needles do not reduce well so I have never really bothered with them. I like shohin sized trees and the needle length is too long for such a size...

    seedling wilt fungicide tips

I have been using a copper based fungicide and have had not fungus issues so far with my seeldings. I spray them with it approximately every few waterings.

    Austrian Black Pine

The difference is that Walter Pall's trees are collected and what we are looking at are seedlings or nursery material. The collected trees are usually 100+ years old versus a couple year old seedling from a nursery or actually growing from seeds like I am trying. I see what I am attempting is a...

    Bonsai Forums Selling Out

I can second what Steve says because I am also a member of that bonsai forum. There are no politics, flames wars, etc. going on there, just people helping other people out. I subscribe to several forums but I call bonsaihelp home. Don't get me wrong, there are great people on most forums with...

    Growing Pinus Nigra from seed

Thanks for showing a couple of examples. I am going to try different styles (i.e. literati, fat shohins, cascade). I am also going to try different techniques to thicken up the trunk (i.e. tile under plant, let wire dig in, super feeding, etc.). I am hoping to build of stock of at least half a...

    Growing Pinus Nigra from seed

This year I will be growing Austrian Pines (Pinus Nigra) from seed. I know it is a long journey (i.e. 20+ years). I am in my 30's so it is now or never. The reason why I have chosen this species is A.) The seeds are free from Austrian Pines adjacent to my back yard. B.) No one seems to be...

    Austrian Black Pine

I am going to grow some Pinus Nigra from seed this year (before I get too old). I know you did not get this tree at an early age but maybe you can answer a question. Do you treat the Pinus Nigra species exactly like a JBP? I am going to be growing from seed using the method in the Stone Lantern...

    Little slash pine

Don't you get brown needle tips after cutting them? Anyway, that is looking good. Did you grow from seed or collect? I would not have identified that as a Pinus elliottii from the picture.

The Ultimate “Put Up or Shut Up” Challenge

Ok, I guess that is fair enough about the species being unknown until it reaches the door step. The only issue I can see is the bidding process, like a couple of previous posters and myself mentioned. Other than that, hopefully you get some good participation. Unfrtunately, I don't see the...

The Ultimate “Put Up or Shut Up” Challenge

This should be interesting if you get enough people to participate. I will be the first to admit that I do not yet possess the talent to enter this contest. Right now I do not have the funds either. It is good to see that this contest can go to a good cause. While I do not know William...

    Superthrive - it Works -myth

Very interesting and long responses to this subject. It kind of reminds me of people debating religion, a debate that never seems to go anywhere... I've done some additional research since last night and have found several debates, mainly long like this one, on other forums. It appears that...

    Superthrive - it Works -myth

Thanks for the info Jason. I have been looking for where it was mentioned, but some respected bonsai master on Pines, mentioned something to this effect. I am thinking that one of the chemicals in superthrive may have some sort of antifungal properties. I am looking to confirm this. This...
