    My Senjumaru JBP is doomed…

I don’t have any pumice, closest thing is perlite but that’s possibly too water retentive. I think the issue was long-standing, there was japanese (landscape?) cloth embedded in the inner root ball!

    My Senjumaru JBP is doomed…

At least it’s rootball now “fits this pot”….gahhh. I saved this JWP using the gravel method, also had “no roots”, but it was a close thing and took three years, and it lost most branches. The issue with this WAS compost/weevils:

    My Senjumaru JBP is doomed…

Not 100% sure why but my Senjumaru (sport of Kotobuki) JBP has suffered total root system death. Initially assumed weevils but there’s not much evedence. Did have an original very compact gritty inner rootball and I potted up into looser mix….might be frost, might be over-watering…anyway. The...

Grafting Scots Pine ‘Beuvronensis’ onto JBP

Yeah I’m seeing initial “dwarf” scion needle length etc being over the top on JBP rootstock, but maybe that settles down once the root/foliage ratio evens up later on? Hard to know

Grafting Scots Pine ‘Beuvronensis’ onto JBP

1yr old Scots ‘Beuvronensis’ on JBP….will cut the understock back in stages over the summer probably.

Thoughts on Peter Chan? (Herons Bonsai)

Are there any clubs near you? They are the best value support you can get normally (often you can go further to other clubs as a one off to see particular demos), Bonsai Today mags and youtubers who have done apprenticeships are also a solid source of facts

    Another field grown trident

That’s a great move, I have to watch for vine weevils eating all the new roots when I do it though, just a thought. :)

Two new youtube channels to follow!

Possible. I was last there as a kid, doing a workshop with Harry - he gave me a free tree as I was leaving, was a nice guy.

Best Strategy for Grafted Seedlings of Harder to find Cultivars

I’d wire them, then as soon as you can get the wire off and get them in the ground, burying the graft and wrapping wire or a tiewrap round them above the graft. You should get a fatter trunk and new roots in 1-2 years, faster in the long run than air layers/pot growing

Thoughts on Peter Chan? (Herons Bonsai)

The brushstroke comment made me think - I always like drawings/paintings where a lot of image detail appears in the viewer’s mind in spite of a minimal number if marks in the artwork. And in fact that’s usually where we end up with bonsai, rarely is it an accurate scale model of a full size tree...

    Shantung Maple - WSJ

Your rounded nebari mean you can change the angle more easily, if it was me I’d stick it in the ground at 30-45 degrees using that pair of lower branches as a new leader and first branch. But I would do the chop in a year or more, the tree would need vigour in the lower branches first to avoid...

    Shantung Maple - WSJ

Can’t you get it in the ground at your new place once there? Re damaged branches areas, wrapping them in grafting tape seem to help them survive/not dry out. Cut paste seems to get into cracks where it gets in the way but maybe that’s just me!

    Shantung Maple - WSJ

If I was you I would get it in the ground and develop from there. You’ll save SO much time even if you just want a smooth taper at the top. Unless you go for a hollow/“split” trunk I suppose…. I’ve got one of these in the ground myself!

Thoughts on Peter Chan? (Herons Bonsai)

I feel that at the very least we should look at the trees to judge how effective any methods are, and I mean ones they have themselves created. Not imported. Applied to everyone to make it fair. :)

    Blaauws grafted on San Jose

Oddly enough I get the majority of cuttings from my Blauuws to root! Slow though. But ZERO from my (particular) imported itoigawa! San Jose is like 95% root in all sizes up to an inch thick. I’ve done normal style grafting of Blauuws and Itoigawa to San Jose, and Itoigawa to Blauuws, this is...

    Blaauws grafted on San Jose

I realise normally we leave some under-stock green on conifers….BUT 1. I think there’s a good chance it’ll heal and fire up in time to save the scion given that juniper cuttings can live months (years?!) in a humid environment without roots and 2. well basically I had a nice San Jose root base...

I may be going to far here. But is this a clear ripoff?

I pretty much use my imagination for tree drawings these days to play it safe - pondered online prints etc but as soon as an image is out there is gets ripped off. As for China I have personal dealings with a UK business getting a Chinese company to manufacture their product - next thing they...
