Need help finding set of Japanese books

I meant "you can send your order to Kinbon (in English) to purchase the set of books (in Japanese)" ;) They can also be purchased through Amazon Japan, which usually gets books/magazines to my door in 3 business days.

    European Olive is this normal?

FWIW, I have a tiny olive and a monster olive that I have kept alive and kicking for a few years (3 years for the monster, 7 years for the tiny). The tiny olive gets winter-stored in the basement (along with the citrus), with south facing windows, and gets watered only once the pot is fully...

Anybody have experience with making Anagama/wood fired bonsai pots?

You could scale up a minigama... that design uses a forced air feed to reach stoneware temperatures. It runs on a mix of charcoal and wood.

18 months of pot making and I’m improving.

Nice, I hope I'll meet you there ;)

Need help finding set of Japanese books

I was sort of expecting that the last two wouldn't be published after the lack of updates post 2019, but "low interest" in prunus and chojubai? wtf? From past discussions with him, I know that the project was costlier than he had expected and it is entirely possible that the sales of the French...

    The Trophy 2023 - 25 & 26 feb - Genk, Belgium who's going?

The proper food for the trophy is stoofvlees on top of fries! I'll be there on Saturday with a few members of my club. Maybe we need something to recognize fellow bnuts.

Need help finding set of Japanese books

Actually someone (Guy Maillot) already acquired the rights to the French and English translations... but I think the project was shelved. The French translation covers books 1 to 8... there's been more than 2 years without updates. I'll check to see if they're still planning to release the rest.

Rapeseed meal as fertilizer for Scot Pine

Rapeseed meal is ok, but there are two types: -fat meal (press extraction only, about 8% oil remaining) -fully extracted meal (press extraction, followed by solvent extraction of the leftovers, about 1% oil remaining) Most of the commercially available rapeseed meal is the fully extracted kind...

Can crushed rapeseed be used instead of rapeseed meal as fertilizer?

Digging up an old thread... You want rapeseed meal, but there are two types: -fat meal (press extraction only, about 8% oil remaining) -fully extracted meal (press extraction, followed by solvent extraction of the leftovers, about 1% oil remaining) Most of the rapeseed meal you'll commercially...

I'm across the border in the Bouillon and Florenville area. Some members of my club have expressed interest, would it be possible to have an idea of the price range? Thanks in advance! Michael

I passed the link to some members of my club... we'll see. It's probably not far from us.

    Hong kong Kumquat/ Kinzu

It's a wild kumqat. It's supposedly able to survive -10C but that would be in the ground and not in a pot. I'm sheltering all my citrus to be on the safe side... even the ones that support down to -15C (poncitrus trifoliata).

    Hong kong Kumquat/ Kinzu

Kinzu/キンズ/金豆 means "golden bean(s)", because of the tiny size of the fruits. Regular kumquats are called "kinkanzoku"/キンカン属 in Japanese.

    Hong kong Kumquat/ Kinzu

They root rather well and can be grown from cuttings. They are also commonly air-layered and mame/shohin with radical trunk movement can be trained from root cuttings. The seeds take up to 3 months to germinate and the seedlings will take 6 to 8 years before fruiting, I have a few non "golden...

Old Bonsai Tool Kit Posted on CL

The scissors are ikenobo school style, so there is no doubt that this is an ikebana tool set :) I absolutely agree with Rockm that post mid 1950s is the most likely period for the set. Mark-wise, it could be have been either 1921-1941 or 1952-onwards... it can't be around 1915 like the seller...

What’s your latest Bonsai related purchase?

The October issue of Bonsai Sekai, the main feature being 42 pages of "Enjoying Japanese White Pine foliage".

Old Bonsai Tool Kit Posted on CL

Wouldn't the post WWII one be stamped "made in occupied Japan" rather than "made in Japan" which would be 1921 to 1941? Otherwise, I agree with you it's probably not worth much. I agree with @Lutonian, those are probably ikebana tools rather than bonsai tools.

Interesting video on Prunus Mume branch wiring

I have done something a bit similar to get dramatic movement in the trunk of young cherry trees in the past. I'm not sure I'd try it on mume as they're not cheap :)

    Satsuki in Belgium.

At some point, Marc had possibly the largest collection of satsuki in Europe. He imported a very large amount of advanced trees and organized a yearly Satsuki festival with guest Japanese demonstrators. When I went in Spring, there was one row of satsuki left in the public greenhouse. There were...

    Satsuki in Belgium.

I was there this spring and bought a couple of Camellias. Unfortunately, Marc isn't getting any younger and the passing of his wife didn't help. Many of the trees were neglected and there were quite a few dead trees in the conifer greenhouse. There was also a huge ume that had died back and now...

    Ebihara Board Technique and Drainage

Well, those vineyards are just a 1h drive from my garden... there were vineyards all around me, but they've been gone for a long time. It's more cereal-y than grape-y now, and there's also a lot of hops :)
