A “Hot Lips” Huang azalea hybrid Hu 4-2-85

I have not. Just dug it out from the flower bed a few weeks ago. Going to take some of the azaleas when we move. I want to propagate it.

    Shohin azalea… hard cutback update

Just took photo of this Chinzan this morning. I had it back into the deeper terracotta pot after the show as our weather is very hot, 90-100+F in the summer. Not good to keep it in show pot. Just a couple of flowers now. Several other azaleas on the bench are flowering with various colors.

    Shohin azalea… hard cutback update

Dawn is a good friend. We visited her last fall when my wife and I did presentations and workshops on azaleas and kusamono, respectively, at The NOLA Bonsai Society. What color is the flower? The leaves are lanceolate, and David had Hakurin and Chinzan, both with that leaf shape if I remember...

    Shohin azalea… hard cutback update

He probably got it last June at the Lone Star Bonsai Federation ‘Tiny Trees on the Trinity’ convention in Fort Worth. The vendor, David Kreutz, specializes in imported satsuki azalea.

    Shohin azalea… hard cutback update

Yes, I do. Will have to take a photo tomorrow. In the 2019 Bonsai on the Bayou convention, I used it in a 7-point shohin display. It is the left most shohin in a blue pot.

    Shohin azalea… hard cutback update

Your azalea looks very healthy, and hard pruning in early spring will help you direct new growths where you want them to be. I wrote a blog on a one-year progression of hard pruning a shohin Chinzan. I hope this would help...

    Fungal Issues or Slight Sunburn?

John, I just wrote a reply for Apex 3 about using GardenFos and spinosad for treating azalea fungal growth and thrips for organic treatments. Best protection of thrips is to apply imidaclopid in early spring like March in my area.

    Fungal Issues or Slight Sunburn?

Just adding my two cents to what Deep Sea Diver wrote. Looks like you have thrips and fungal issues. If you want to go organic, dipotassium salts of phosphoric acid such as GardenFos is very effective for controlling fugal growth in azalea, it is also systemic. It is also great for treating...

    Azalea...nutrient deficient...?

Although the leaves show chlorosis, the stunted leaves are most likely caused by chili thrips. This insect is very small, about 1 mm long, and is not very visible. When infested, new growths are stunted. It is not easily killed. I use Spinosad to get rid of chili thrips. Attached is a page from...

Azalea Wars 1 - Waterwashing Roots - Satsuki and other Azaleas - From an Inquisitive person

F Thank you John. From what I learned, in Japan they sell a water jet gun with 700 psi pressure specifically for cleaning azalea roots. Most of our power washer is about 2000 psi, and thus I used the Ryobi regulator to control the pressure when blasting the old azalea soil. It works well for...

Best time to take zelkova serrata cuttings and ( a question if is legal to propagate a cultivar if not selling but for only myself to use as bonsai

As far as I know, patent is country specific. If it is patented in Japan but not in the US, then it has no standing in the US. You can search ”Zelkova” , “Goshiki” in the US Patent Office website and see if you get any hit. Patenting is expensive and it has to be maintained regularly by paying...

This is the steel rod I use. The T shape handle and a tapered end make it easier to dig holes compared to just a straight rod.
