    Shohin azalea in full bloom

Here is a small Wakaebisu azalea, about ten or eleven inches tall, almost completely bloomed. I like the color of these flowers, plus it is a strong tree. The apex was broken off in a 100 mph wind storm several years ago. Since then I have been rebuilding the top but it’s still a little thin up...

    Nice fall color on barberry

Here is some nice color on this shohin barberry. This is the best angle to view the color, from straight on it’s not that good. Barberries are not fun and hard to work but sometimes you get this.

Cork bark elm from root cutting

Here is a shohin cork bark elm grown from a root cutting. This is from Telperion Farms, so it is special for me, they sent me a few sawed off chunks of roots to turn into bonsai. It has been so hot and dry here that I am watering 3 times a day sometimes, and so I get moss on the trunk. Just...

Blue spruce yamadori with new shoes

Finally repotted this blue spruce the other day. Two winters ago, mice or some kind of rodent staged an attack, killed a few trees, and burrowed out a good portion of the roots of this tree to make a home. This required an emergency repot in winter, and last year I just let the tree recover...

    Blue spruce after haircut

This is a wild collected Colorado blue spruce after some pruning and wiring today. This tree got set back a year and a half ago when some rodent excavated the roots to make a home. After emergency winter repotting, the tree sulked for a season, then this season had strong shoots with multiple...

    I didn’t survive ...

The great rodent invasion of 2017/18. These two of my favorites were heavily damaged late in winter by some kind of rodent. The big elm and the boxwood were two of my favorites. I couldn’t believe that they would eat boxwood roots but they did. They never recovered and died a slow death. Inhabe...

    I survived ...

The great rodent invasion of 2017/18. Lived here 20 years. Last winter never saw so many mice/critters in my yard in winter. They got into my garage and trees and a few trees died, some made it. I was forced to repot a number of trees mid winter. These are the survivors who were attacked by...

    Trident maple fall color

Some fall color on my trident. This tree is recovering from the great rodent invasion of winter 2018. Mice or voles chewed up the roots and girdled the first left branch, forcing an emergency repot in the dead of winter. The tree bounced back and I am growing a new left branch. It will probably...

Potentilla bunjin - turned upside down

Here is a potentilla I have that has been thru a lot. It originally was a branch on a big multi trunk tree in a big pot. After some major trauma due to a storm I think, it was turned into a bunjin with a sister tree that did not survive the ex wife. This pic is from 2012.

Anybody ever done an emergency repot in winter ?

I went into my garage today to throw some snow on my trees. To my horror, my cork bark elm looked like something had been digging in it. There were several holes in the soil and dirt mounded around the trunk ! I clipped the wires and pulled the tree out to discover a really nice mouse den and...

Here is another Ligurian stone but this one doesn't have a daiza yet. About 8 inches long, very heavy. It reminds me of some places I have seen in the Black Hills.

    Trident with nice base

This trident maple is about 10-11 inches tall. It has a great base and nice curves. I got it as a taller tree, and I chopped it back twice. Can you see where the first of four chops was done ? The tree is from Telperion Farms, they have great stuff. Next year into a proper pot hopefully, and...

    Spruce yamadori

I treated myself to a nice tree this year. I didn't buy any trees last year, and I am selling 20 or so stock trees to pay for this one. I saw it on Facebook, and couldn't resist. Collected in Colorado by Todd Schlafer, styled by Suthin, and sold to me by Scott Lee. Blue spruce have always...

    Cork bark elm semi cascade

This tree was started from a large piece of root from a much bigger tree. It sat in a pot for a couple of years growing a leader, and after turning it around a few times in my hand I came up with this design. I cut it back, wired it, and crammed it into its new home. The pot looks too small but...
