    Anyones trees waking up?

Weird weather or what? CNY and Mohawk Valley - golfers are happier than skiers & snowmobilers. Get the lawnmowers back out!

    Some Pictures

Oh my indeed! Oh yes, that Ponderosa is begging to attend a future U.S. National Exhibition. Nature's creations..... no wiring required.

Ahhh. Yes I do recognize it now. Thank you. How about more specifics about your tree in particular - a little 'history'.

Beautiful tree. Love your work. Tell us about this tree. From the pics it appears to have soft short needles, a bit like our larches.

    Lucky dog... Happy Larch...

Love this larch and remember the discussion here with the now former 'keeper' of this tree. Many thanks for sharing your plans for it. I have no experience with slab planting but will learn alongside the others as you go on to the next level with it. Ron Lang will become instrumental in the project.

    Utah Juniper plans.

Paul, I think what the guys are saying has some merit. A full tilt in the opposite direction with the 2 heavy branches going left and a bit downward (even if jinned) and the apex wired down to the right or flattened some. It would require removal of a few low branches. I do like the pot...

    Would you buy this?

Ditto all that Vic says & add my thanks.

    Ponderosa: First Snow in Wyoming

NICE Dan, very nice. We will enjoy watching any updates/new photos of your work with this ponderosa. Have you collected others? Do you ever place them into grow boxes - or the ground - for a recovery period? Is Douglas close to your collecting site? Lots of questions for the new guy!

    grewia as bonsai

John - "RI, the shohin state"? Now that's cute! I've been to Pauline's many times but do not remember her grewia. Will have to check it out next time I'm there. Her bougie? Oh yeah! Larches? Awesome! Visit Pauline Muth at www.pfmbonsai.com tanlu- thanks for the pics. Nice. So...

    grewia as bonsai

Never had any care sheets or growing instructions. A woman in our club has a small shop and sells them, though it probably came from Meehan's Miniatures originally. It was only recently that I was advised to give it more iron. Have begun to do that and hope for a healthier tree. Like you I have...

    grewia as bonsai

I have had a little grewia 'in-training' as a bonsai, semi cascade style, for about 5 years now. It loves the outdoors in summer months and flowers well. (Lavender Star Flower). Then I cut it way back when I bring it in in the fall and place it under lights. It sulks a bit and mopes along...

    A day wiring a hornbeam

A very well developed hornbeam - nicely wired. Have we seen this one 'in-leaf'? Not a fan of the pot either. Will be glad to see it replaced. Question - do you consider the thick heavy moss as detrimental to the health of the roots?

    Spreading Nebari

Many people place a flat tile beneath the tree when repotting. However I've never done this and have wondered how the tree gets wired into the pot while the tile is 'in the way'. Maybe we'll both learn something here!

    Japanese Larch Shohin?

Thank you for the updates with seasonal color. A handsome larch which will certainly improve and age nicely. I will be watching (in May) for your shots of the wonderful Spring tufts of new needles that it will show.

    No Posts From Japan

What a shame - how much longer will the elderly live on? Who will care for the 'owners' bonsai when the old folks are all gone? Will future Asian youth be sent to apprentice with Western bonsai masters?

    No Posts From Japan

Interesting points brought up here. "Hobby for old people" - but then why don't we hear from those older folks? Over on another forum - a very large family of forums actually - there are sections specifically for diverse forms of gardening. Some Japanese members will discus some topics freely...

    Local club auction Larch.

raydomz, You can see that this is a very nice larch just from the responses you've gotten already. NICE! For us it is easy to say this or that should be changed. It's your tree to study and perhaps alter in the future. You will get ideas from others. I too would like to see the top...

Where to Find a Starter Tree?!? (Colorado)

I would not argue with any of Brian's points. Very good. Pines are so rewarding when properly developed, but not an easy study. If you are serious about reading, and you should, I would suggest the BONSAI TODAY Master' Series book PINES, about $30 from Amazon. But also consider getting the...

    Moss Question

Joe, Have been bringing the trop's in for a couple weeks now - at least for the colder nights - back out on warm sunny days. Moss. From my experience moss does not do well under artificial lighting. More importantly it can be harmful to the trees if it climbs up and around the trunk. It...

    Bonsai on NCIS

Oh Yeah! Our gal Lily (we saw her at the OnCenter in Syracuse last Fall) still gives a hell of a 'STAND UP' one woman show. And now she's doing bonsai on NCIS! A long way from Edith Ann & Ernestine (Laugh-In). Gotta love it!!! :p Thanx Joe.

I would say that the sedge works very well in your display. Congrats on your first (of many) entry into the bonsai 'show' business. Very nice hornbeam!

    japanese juniper

Mike, Interesting little piece of material - off to a nice start. The removal of the 1st right branch was smart. On the left the lowest stump bothers me - the pointing downward part. But for the health of the tree leave everything intact for now, as others have mentioned. Get it (and keep it)...
