Ramify branching on Hinoki (Chamaecyparis Obtusa "Gracilis")

I’m getting ready to do a light prune on my Hinoki; Chamaecyparis Obtusa "Gracilis". It’s got very long slender branches with minimal secondary branching and I was wondering if there is a good way to prune to promote secondary branching? It’s about 40 inches high and these branches are maybe...

    Cleaning up nursery bought Hinoki

Hi all, I just bought a Hinoki cypress from nursery stock and wanted to clean up the bottom area and do some wiring but the pot it came in is rather tall and hard to work with. I’ve read it’s a bit late in the year to repot Hinoki so I’m wondering if anyone has any advice? I don’t want to...

Hi! So im pretty experienced with atlantic cypress in my own time having grown bonsai - but ive recently been given a small tree by a friend who was struggling to care for it. Hi, I bought a very small hinoki cypress nana ( 10 cm ) and I would like to know if there are any tips on growing them as in any particular disease I should be wary off or how wet they like to stay? Thx.

    Brittle Hindi Cypress "Verdoni"

In hindsight I should not have bought this tree, but it seemed like a good deal in the moment at Home Depot. I figured the the brown needles were just sun scorch (there have been lots of high UV index days here in Connecticut USA this summer). When I got it home, I noticed many branches that...

    extensive root system, Hinoki Cypress?

Hi Everyone, This is my first post on this forum--nice to meet everyone:) I live in Eastern Massachusetts, USDA Zone 6. An arborist planted a Hinoki Cypress in 2019 in the front foundation of my house and it has grown very well. Because I'd like to plant some tulips, I dig out some soil and...

My first hinoki cypress tips are yellowing

Is this fungal? Yesterday was very hot and I was unable to mist in the afternoon. Is this lack of water? I just bought this from a fellow bonsai nut member and I do not want to lose it!

Interior of this new Hinoki Cypress is super wet.

Turns out this tree is super close to the soil and there was a lot of wet, dead foliage in the interior of this tree. The soil feels really wet. What should I do? Exterior foliage feels and looks great. I'm guessing I should clear some soil from the top and place it below to prop the plant up...

    Trouble with Hinoki cypress

Hello, I’ve had this hinoki cypress for about a month. I live in southern Florida, I had this in direct sun and it was getting in the high 80’s low 90’s. I have since brought it in under a screen house that offers less intense sun and heat. Is this dark brown just burnt from the sun ? I am also...

    Will this beauty survive !?

Hi all, This weekend, again I had the chance to dig out this amazing tree. Unfortunately while lifting the tree out of the ground, a lot of The roots just fell off. I made it wet and placed it in a big training pot with akadama, some vulcastrat and moss. for now it just has to rest for at...

Digging out an old Hinoki Cypres

Just wanted to share this nice find. Hinoki’s a.k.a Chamaecyparis are my absolute favorite! Got the chance to dig out this old lady from someone’s garden. Had to cut a few taproots and it took about 1 hour in total. Hopefully it can recover! First styling will be autumn 2023.

    Impossible Hinoki Cypress? need Help/advice

Hi Bonsai friends! 1 year ago I had the chance to dig out this Hinoki from someone’s garden. Because my car was too small (Nissan Almera from 1998😉), I already had to make a first selection of branches. When I came home I realized the roots where waaayyy to big to fit in the pot I got for it...

    Please advise on my hinoki

I've got this hinoki earlier this year. It's been doing well, grew up about an inch, but now it has some yellow leaves. All of those leaves seem to be on downfacing parts of branches or near the starting points of branches. Is it a normal thing at the end of season or should I worry/do...

    Lorax7 Hinoki #1 progression

Hinoki nursery stock and pieces of deadwood acquired fall 2021 from a pet shop (sold for aquarium use). I believe the deadwood is mopane wood. It’s very hard, dense, heavy wood. My intention for this planting is to create a tanuki (phoenix graft). Did an initial lime sulfur treatment on the...

    Hinoki Cypress styling advice

Hello all! I’ve only posted here once (asking for hinoki advice) but I spend many hours here reading. Since my first post I have fallen ever deeper into my bonsai addiction. Let’s just say both my porches are full of trees. Anyway, I have got a few Hinoki Cypresses and one sawara cypress, so I...

    B&B Hinoki

Starting the progress on this Hinoki. Bought this tree from Home Depot and it may not have been the most wise purchase. It was B&B and under the burlap it was hiding the graft. I looked through all of the ones available and couldnt see a graft on any of them, so I thought these didn’t have...

    Hinoki Cypress Nursery Stock questions

Hi everyone! I am pretty new to bonsai. I just joined this forum community. I have accumulated 4 trees that can be safely called developed bonsai, 3 potted into bonsai pots that are in training to become bonsai, 2 cuttings growing furiously, and a porch full of nursery stock. I guess you could...

When to Ground Layer a Hinoki Cypress

I bought a pre-bonsai hinoki cypress with a thick, almost bulb at the top of the nebari. I'm considering ground layering it above this ugly area and starting over. I'm wondering when is the best time of year to actually cut into the cambian and begin the process? If I do this to the tree, I'm...

I got this Chamaecyparis Obtusa Nana Gracilis, non-grafted, nice trunk, plenty of ramification, and very healthy. Before doing any cleaning, pruning, branch choice or styling, I have to take care of the soil. Absolutely horrible muck, takes ages to drain (in fact it doesn't drain at all even...
