sacrifice branch

I just saw this method of training JBP in Bonsai today #12, is this a appropriate way to develop JBP or it's just outdated as I haven't seen anyone mentioned on this site? If I put it in larger pot there will be faster growth but I'm a bit worried about the big scars, will they ever completely...

Pretty new to bonsai but not new to grafting. I've grafted dozens of fruit trees such as apples in the past. I just picked up my first Japanese maple (no clue what the variety is but doesn't matter much to me at this point) and I after sitting with it for a few days I really enjoy the overall...
