It is a shame that this patriarch has fallen. 1500 years is about all they can go. The trees get super weak trying to keep the rooty structure and the foliage structure in balance with 300 feet between them. This park is about 50 miles from my home.

While the redwoods on the Calif. coast grow as tall they never reach the girth that some of the Sequoias do.

Just to put it into perspective one of the last Roman emperors was in power before the final decline and entry into the Dark Ages when this tree sprouted. This coin Justin II (565-578 A.D.) shows Justin II with his wife Sophia.

Wow what a thing to catch on video. Obviously sad that it had to fall but it is part of the cycle. I wonder how many deadwood features this thing created...

Neat video, at least they didn't cut it down to count the rings.
