Just received these yesterday; a $300-something order. First order from them.

First is a Little Sango and the second is a Jordan Full Moon.

Do you think they have Pseudomonas syringae?

Acer are naturally prone to tip dieback. I wouldn't be too concerned if it is just the tips.

I really like the quality from Conifer Kingdom, although I suggest getting the 1 gallons, less root problems to fix.

I think they were just pruned back just behind the nodes in anticipation of the internode dieing back. This is common in J. Maples and it is always a good idea to leave a little to allow for this.

Personally I would have contacted the seller. A disease would rapidly spread in a nursery scenario, with plants that are probably touching each other.

Here’s the full moon now:

Didn’t realize how much the black has spread. Time to contact the seller. I spent $305 on these ...

Doesn't look like any special problem. Give it another couple weeks to leaf out.

It might try to leaf out, but it is done. If you were to cut the trunk into, you would see that the pathogen has infected the cambrium, it will be dark brown or tan. Also, as others have mentioned, move it away form the rest of your trees.

Looks just like whatever doomed the tree in your blog. What a pisser. Looks like they’re going in the trash before they affect my other trees.

Will update this thread after I hear back from the seller.

Wow, Forsoothe. That tree is dead as a doornail! That's very different than tip dieback, black on the trunk = death.

So, @John P. , have you contacted Conifer Kingdom and showed them your pix (or refer them to this thread)? They should make good if it is gone (it is still in the pot, still has the tag, etc.).

I sent an email to them earlier this afternoon with a link to this thread. Will follow up when I hear back.

I thought something wasn’t right when they arrived ... seems, unfortunately, I was correct.

Yikes, that is no good. Isolate the full moon from your other trees. You should be getting a refund.

Traded email with Sam at Conifer Kingdom. Their/his response was excellent and quick, satisfying my concerns and wishes.

Today I received a most beautiful, large Aureum Full Moon Maple. Looks super healthy, and will make a beautiful container landscape subject once we move back into our remodeled house.

Great to see a company doing the right thing - and to see a customer give credit where credit is due.

I had the same kind of problem with the most popular Acer suppliers in france, out of three I ordered, two had pseudomonas, and I had a lot of trouble getting only one as a replacement tree...

Aureum is one the best cultivars in the moon series imho. They will put on a show for sure. They have a great bright color and smaller leaf size. But extra care is needed to protect from sun scorching. They are sensitive to full sun. Good luck!

Thanks so much. It seems Aureum has some (at least visual) similarities to Jordan, which I really like, too. I had also read about the sun intolerance, so the area it’s going in is pretty sheltered from both sun and wind—considering we’re in coastal Southern California, this is important:

I’m excited for that neon yellow-green to fill that space. When I saw this picture of Jordan, I was hooked:
