" All viewing stone enthusiasts are invited to attend a North American symposium devoted exclusively to stone appreciation and featuring international speakers. The goal of our group of stone enthusiasts, (Sean Smith, James Doyle, Martin Schmalenberg, Arthur Skolnik, Glenn Reusch & Wm. N. Valavanis) sponsoring this symposium, is to promote the appreciation and deepen the knowledge of suiseki and viewing stones. Our world-renowned speakers from Japan, England, Spain, Canada and the United States will share their extensive knowledge and expertise throughout the four-day symposium. If you are passionate about stones, this is the event you have been dreaming of!
Registration is required for attendance at the International Stone Appreciation Symposium. Please join us for an enjoyable and highly informative four days. Early registrants will be given priority for the workshops and stone critiques. Register early and start thinking about which stone(s) you will bring."

Seiji Morimae– Japan: Proprietor of “S-Cube” in Tokyo and Saitama, Japan, specializing in bonsai, suiseki and artifacts. He has a vast knowledge of Japanese aesthetics, bonsai and suiseki and combines them withhis fine taste. This is his third appearance in the United States.

Rafael Monje Garcia– Spain: Mr. Garcia is a pioneer in the introduction of suiseki in Spain. He has spent nearly 40 years searching for stones in many different areas of his country. Mr. Garcia is a gifted woodcarver and has made daiza for every one of his suiseki.

Kemin Hu– Massachusetts, USA: Ms. Hu has been importing and spreading knowledge on Chinese scholar’s rocks throughout the world. She has written several books and freely shares her enthusiasm and her love of Chinese scholar’s rocks.

Peter Warren– England: Peter Warren has spent a five year intensive apprenticeship at the Shunka-en Bonsai Museum in Tokyo, Japan where he learned from Kunio Kobayashi. Peter has absorbed the Japanese aesthetics and the knowledge for the appreciation and display of suiseki.

Larry Ragle– California, USA: Suiseki and bonsai authority from California who has played a significant part in the popularity and appreciation of suiseki. Active in many organizations, he is a director of the National Bonsai Foundation and the president of the California Bonsai Society. Larry studied Keido display with Susumu Sudo in Japan. He has written extensively on both suiseki and bonsai.

Sean L. Smith– Pennsylvania, USA: Proprietor of Custom Oriental Woodcraft specializing in suiseki and daiza carving as well as stands. He has received awards for both his bonsai and suiseki and also makes containers. His exquisite daiza can be found in the finest collections around the world and have received the highest accolades in Japan.

Arthur Skolnik– Canada: Bonsai and suiseki authority and skilled daiza carver from Toronto, Canada. He is the proprietor of Shibui Landscaping and specializes in Japanese gardens using stones extensively. His articles, video and programs have been well received.

Martin Schmalenberg– New Jersey, USA: Head of Asian Studies at Blair Academy and long-time bonsai and suiseki artist. He brings information on the cultural, philosophical and aesthetic appreciation of stones to his educational programs which are presented around the country.

James F. Doyle– Pennsylvania, USA: Proprietor of Nature’s Way Nursery and a regular on the bonsai ecture circuit. His Japanese garden design work combined with his bonsai knowledge and skill and Japanese symbolism have enhanced his stone appreciation.

Wm. N. Valavanis– New York, USA: Proprietor of the International Bonsai Arboretum and publisher of International BONSAI. He is one of the preeminent bonsai educators in the US and travels around the world to share his knowledge and taste in bonsai and suiseki.
