I find joy in working on these cheap nursery stock babies.

I think any newb like myself will find the process of taking this material and transforming it, quit gratifying.
Anyways, here’s the 3 plants ( I posted this before in the newbies share your trees Here

For me, all 3 of those get repotted in Summer.

For you, I'd make it 2021, the first full moon after the Solstice.

You know, I was watching this thing the other day that said August is the only month which Minnesota hasn't seen snow. That's Crazy!

I wouldn't trust spring at all.

Have you had previous success in spring?

You know, your probably right.
last year I was so eager to just do everything when I purchased plants. -at least the young cheap ones like these. I hard pruned top and bottom and repotted all at once in late spring.

These youngin’s’ probably could get repotted now as well. Haha! Just pretending I have learned some patience.

probably right.

I may not be, depending on how fast your winter sets in.

I reckon though, roots will grow more into the fall winter, since the ground stays warm.
Where, they will not grow at all in spring until ready.

I think that is why I've found so much failure in spring.

This ridiculous, "as the buds swell" thing....

There is an entire 3 month window in spring where any of my trees can begin growing. Never the same either. And this window shifts a half month too.

So one year, the maples and mugo can begin in late March, and the elms and spruce don't start till early June, then it could be entirely different in other years.

Which means, it's literally a fucking guessing game.

No thanks!

Much easier to navigate the "knowns" of summer.

Thinking more, the plants That I killed by my repots last year were 2 small Mugo. I now understand a bit more about Mugos needs and well, pines in general.
I plan on doing more of a partial root cleaning on this ugly one.
Would you repot on/after strawberry moon?
Thanks!

Probably the next. But it will depend on the condition of the tree.

I have a mugo that is still opening, that one will wait.

If you get an early spring and they are open by the Strawberry Moon, I think you'll be ok.

One of Walter's keys, and an aha moment for me, is to Repot as the weather is cooling, not getting more and more unbearable. In this changing climate, we're best playing by ear.

I feel like having 2 lunar cycles after Repot and before Dormancy is plenty to grow new roots.
