Bonsai Mike
Mame
I just splurged and added 2 more Japanese maples to the collection from Mark Comstock via the FB auctions group. I received one earlier, a Kashima, and was so happy with it I had to grab two more when they came up. Couldn’t recommend Mark enough, I really like his pre bonsai stock and it was shipped well.
I plan on slip potting them until spring, but then I have options and was seeking advice. All 3 are very similar to my first one posted below.
My first thought was to put all 3 in Anderson flats on cutting boards. I have been thinking about this though. The trunks have nice flair and taper and the root systems are already pretty flat and loaded with feeder roots. These were well grown.
I guess I am not used to getting material with this good of a start at this point. Lately, I have been wondering, if I’m happy with the trunks as is, maybe the Anderson flat is overkill and I could save the ones I have left for collected trees.
I assume I’d get more controlled growth with shorter internodes in a bonsai pot. I could shift my focus to the branching and design stage for of development.
Would I be better served working toward final design by going with a smaller training pot and maybe even bringin one in for a workshop or would you take it slow and work on getting roots like the ebihara technique threads?
What would be your next move on development?
I will absolutely post the other two when they get here.
