I am not new to Bonsai , I was big into it 30 years ago but had to give it up due to too much traveling.
I did however plant a few cutting 30 years ago of trident maples and a cork bark elm .
Anyway here are 3 of the tridents I dug up last month , going to start training them .
Any advice would be appreciated. The tallest one will be cut back 1/3 , did not want one that tall.

Will put more pic's on next page
First time trying this so hope the pictures come out ok

I'd dig out some of that dead wood on the lowest big cut to help it heal and roll over.

tree # 2

tree number two , sorry very slow on down loading pictures.
This tree needs to be cut down 1/3 but has lots of promise

Wow..those look awesome. I assume you were training them while they were inthe ground? They have good movement and taper. Looks like a really fun project!

Great bones you have there Judge! Those will make awesome trees. Time to start defining some branching.

Judge, nice stock. Do you know what USDA zone you are in, or what your winter temperature lows are? I bet there are a lot of people here who would be surprised to see tridents like these are being grown in the ground in Canada.

I am surprised to see how small these are after 30 years. Due to the shorter growing seasons I imagine. Great stock though.

Not sure the zone but equal to southern Michigan.
Last winter was really cold and we had 8 feet of snow on top of these trees which broke most of the branches temps were minus 16 f for 2 weeks that's was the coldest winter I can remember.

Decided to start training because I would have had to dig them up anyway , want to extend the garage where they were.
I did a lot of trimming each spring over the years, there are two more in the ground .
These were all 1/8 cutting I had started and planted 25-30 years or so ago

These are some awesome trees for sure! When do you plan to chop the second one?
