Have you contacted Ryan at all about visiting?

I have not, but it has nothing to do with Ryan. Rather, I have received a number of generous invitations to visit other places, and I am probably over capacity and will not be able to visit them all as it now stands. I may have to come back just for a dedicated bonsai visit.

Gonna be in Portland next week, and was considering stopping by Bonsai Mirai. I will have my wife and daughter with me, so it would have taken some political capital expenditure :) Checked out their web site to see what their visitor policy was... and was stunned to see they charge $50 per head just to VISIT. $150 just to walk through the nursery?

Mirai Visits

Any time I see something like this I am always a little confused. Is this their way of saying "we don't really want visitors?" Or "we don't sell retail"? I always thought they sold trees, but apparently not. Guess the streaming video business is wildly lucrative :) I'm more than a little saddened, because bonsai always has the risk of coming off as a "rich person's hobby", when it is anything but. This is not a particularly inclusive policy. :(
I've spent all my money on trees and can't afford this. Although, I may reconsider if there's a free lunch and beer garden included... 🤔

I think it's actually quite smart. You screen out the people who waste your time, people who can't afford to buy anything, and weirdos. If I were working on as many trees as he has, I would value my time and my staff's time and having to stop to answer questions, say hi, take photos, make sure no trees get damaged, give a tour, etc. at more than $50. To me, $50 is like a hand of Blackjack in a casino, but I understand it could be a weeks grocery money for some.

If you're gonna visit, might as well sign up for his website to get the discount.

I guess I'm spoiled. Here in SoCal you can go to the Huntington Gardens, which are 150 acres of Chinese and Japanese gardens, with rose gardens, herb gardens, desert gardens, an extensive conservatory with a rain forest, bog, etc. Plus they have an extensive bonsai and suiseki collection donated by numerous big names. It normally costs $25 a head, but you can stay all day, visit the library, see several art museums, etc. If you are a member of a bonsai club, you can go up for the Bonsai-a-thon, and entrance that day is free, plus they give you free behind-the-scenes tours.

It just surprised me... and leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. I would much rather have had them say "we don't take visitors" than "we take visitors... for $150". I'd rather just buy a nice pot :)
Not sure if you’ve ever checked out the pits on their page, but it’s definitely all about the Benjamins....

Since I originally posted this four years ago, Mirai has had several thefts/vandalism events. I hadn't ever thought about the $50 being a barrier to screening out people who might not have good intentions - and who might simply want to check out your security arrangements :( Within that context, charging an entrance fee makes more sense. And if that is the case, it is really sad...

Here is an article in Bonsaitonight posted within the last few months. Of course this is Jonas visiting and not any random person going for a regular tour...

Their one major vandalism event was personal, turns out it was the ex wife. The entrance fee is purely for lucrative reasons.

There's a video posted on Youtube by Momiji-En doing a Mirai nursery walkthrough a couple of years back. The author does not speak in the video, which I found to be a refreshing alternative to traditional audio/video recordings.

On a related note to the above, I love this video by David Easterbrook specifically due to it perfectly capturing the vibe of two great artists (David de Groot and Ryan Neil) having a candid discussion in the garden.

I hope to some day be able to be half as good a visitor as the Davids are here.
