Ah yes the Crimson King Maple, not a very desired species for Bonsai ...

Not very much to find online or in any other literature for that matter, regarding Bonsai.

Welcome to “A day in the life of a King”, a broad leaved, Norway, maple found (as the name gives away) in the Northern regions of this planet.

Loved and hated, as an invasive species in Canada, the Acer platanoides surely is interesting.
Follow the progress of this beast with me if you are interested, let’s experiment and increase the knowledge about this species as a Bonsai together.

Ciao from Italy!

I don't know much about it, but looks like you have a good start on it. Is it known for its coarseness?
@Lazylightningny

Coarse yes, I think this article explains best.
As said it is not very well know in the Bonsai world as the leaf size is huge, therefore not very much desired.

I am very much looking forward to this year’s growth in particular, intend to feed it properly and repot in a better soil containing pine bark and some generic deciduous tree soil, adding lava rock to the bottom for drainage.

These line my boulevard. I’ve been thinking about layering one of the suckers. Good luck!

Should work like a charm, I say go for it!
As they say over here “You already have a no if you don’t try, it can always turn into a yes!”.

Ciao!
