Well repotting has started.

Noticed -

[ 1 ] That 3 out of the 10 pines had the ability to grow to 1 inch trunks in
10 x 3 inch earthenware containers.

[ 2 ] 5 were 3 feet tall and only had 1/2 inch trunks. Being given away as
learning to grow gifts.

[ 3 ] 2 of the three with 1 inch trunks were cut back to 3 /4 inch heights to
encourage back budding for first three branches.

[ 4 ] These are all around 4 years old.

[ 5 ] Cuttings will be processed for possible rooting.

[ 6 ] Took the first that was cut down last year to 4 inches and has a 1 inch trunk.
very lightly root pruned. Soil that came off was sifted for the 5 mm silica based
gravel, and fresh aged compost added.
Then the 10 x 4 inch pot was filled with fresh mix, 2 to 1 by volume, 1 being aged compost,
the 2 being 5 mm gravel.

A larger earthenware pot was chosen and the new soil and soil that came off, were added
back.
Tree is now 2/3 down in the new pot.

The idea here was to see, if 10 x 4 inches could give 36 inches of height.
Then a new pot load would give at least another 36 inches for the first
branch.
Time will tell.
Good Day

* Thus far not bad, in an earthenware pot maybe 1 to 2 branches in 5/7 years
and a 2 to 3 inch trunk. Fingers crossed.

And how much faster in open soil ?

Also this is a soft wooded tree, with ability to expand as the trunk grows and produce
beautiful surface roots.

Nice anthony thnx for sharing!
The last picture the lowest right branch is very thick imo it shouldnt become any fatter compared to the trunk to have it look natural balanced
Or are you planning to select that branch as new leader to improve taper and add some movement to the trunkline?
Looking forward to hear your future plan's with it!

@defra ,

we break with Japanese convention as the trees go.

So our sense of proportion is as -------- 8 cm of trunk to about 0.75 of first branch = around 6 cm.
then 0.5 to second branch and 0.25 to third branch.
It is a sense of visual proportion -------- does it look believable.
It is how trees grow down here, and the few images of old / mature J.B.pines found on Google out
of Japan.

Additionally in one of the articles of Bonsai Today, the author states, the secret of J.B.pines is
few branches, but thick.

Also in the image, the trunk still has to go to 8 cm, and the branch can still be slowed down .
Thanks for looking and commenting.
Good Day

* Wickedly, the soil is just aged compost and 5 mm silica based gravel with earthenware pots.
Nice and effectively simple.:eek::rolleyes:
