I like your tree jail idea, and the almond is sweet. I have a few in the landscape...

Today I went for a closer inspection of one of my air layers on my Nishiki gawa, aka pine bark maple. It's kind of ugly and upon further inspection the moss appeared to be a little too wet. I've wrung it from the start, but I didn't wring it as I ought. As I planned to redo the air layer I noticed something good. I'm going to leave it alone.

My ginkgo is growing nicely. I decided to thin it out a little; there were a lot of branches coming from the same points. From this angle I was entertaining the thought of a future cascade ginkgo. Haven't seen one yet.

My Toyo Nishiki 001 is growing alright. My 002 died :( It got blight badly and perhaps some aphids. This one had a little blight but seems to be doing alright. It had some aphids at the tips, which I just dealt with. Just growing along thickening and waiting for the next chop in maybe another one, two or three years. I had just thinned out the leaves that crowded the trunk and branches near the trunk; insects should have no place to hide, and air may flow through.

Here's a...I can't recall if it's Murasaki Kyohime or just Kyohime. Anyways, they're very similar. I air layered this and have it in the ground. No roots on one side, so might need root grafts in future. I'd like to ask you if I should do any pruning as I've not done any yet. I think the tandem branches at the nodes can become problematic.
Try to avoid more than one branch from a spot to prevent reverse taper where it matters...I would have thought of wiring one of the low branches as future apex and removin one branch but not too short...like 0.5" from the trunk so you have buds reserved there.

Another Japanese black pine in my landscape, I'm trying out approach grafting using these wire holders. Seems to be good so far. It's been on there less than a year.
Try to wire the top of the pines away and decandle low branches you plan to use...think also future apex for taper and movement...I dont really like pines with no taper.
Lovely projects...I enjoyed your pictures so much.

Some updates.
Here's the pine from post #1. I'm making small steps. It's now in two pieces. They both have taper, movement, and a sacrifice branch so that I may grow them into larger bonsai if I wish.

Early Spring 2015 (The Late spring image is so messy with long growth. I unwired some and repotted into larger colander to accomadate growth.)

The Kyohime air layer at present...It's about 14 inches tall now; more than double the original height. Lots of growth. The yellow portions in the picture is new growth and actually light green. The south sun light is so strong, it's protected most of the day by the purple shrub in front of it.

Some maple air layers...
From left to right: Orange Dream, Shin Deshojo, Orange Dream's root stock (future clump/exposed root?), Nishiki Gawa (rough bark). Nishiki gawa is chopped down very low now. I fear it had some disease in its bark so I removed it. I used some portions above the dark fungus spot for cuttings. Hope the Nishiki Gawa trunk does not suffer anymore disease. Picture was taken last week. So much rain. The shin deshojo has a lot more pink growth on it today than in the picture.

One of the Silverberry that I''ve begun training...
DSC05792.jpg

A JBP that I've been torturing the last 2 years. It started out in a 1 gallon nursery pot. The trunk is 2 inches; 3 inches at the surface of the soil. Could be bigger if I'd never messed with it.

Some things have been lost, but this maple from post 3 today. It's a Murasaki Kyohime. I'm trading it for kishu shimpaku locally. Ray at Bent Tree Bonsai. Nice guy. Maple grew nicely. Needs root work. I'll do more air layers this year.

Trident maple from post 1. I'd like to have my own version of @JudyB piglet. Trunk is about 2 inches. Base about 3. I think I'll go for a larger trunk.

I can't remember where I posted the picture of this maple revealing the large roots it had, but per advice of Adair, I cut them almost flush with the trunk. As a result, I have lots of fibrous roots and fat base hidden under the soil.

My first try at grafting ume. Wonder if it might be too early to tell if I made any gains yet. Looks like some already failed.

It's been over a year since I collected this stump from a fenceline. It was cut down several times by maintenance workers. I've done nothing but cut it back this year.

Well, I drilled a hole down the top to exit on side of the dead wood. Haven't applied any word hardener, preserver, or lime sulfur. No experience here with deadwood. Wondering if I ought to do anything on it this year. The untreated Hackberry wood seems to disintegrate after a year or two if constantly watered or rained on.

An air layer I've failed at for 2 or 3 years. No worries. Grew roots finally and is bigger this year. Very very mild winter last year so roots could've been growing since fall of 2015.

The future tree is 'Bonfire'. Similar to Deshojo.

Twelve inch pot upgraded from 5. After a week, roots already arriving at the edges.

Been working on a few azaleas. Here's one. I chopped it in the spring, and it grew some buds.
20160603_165537.jpg

Thinned it out last week.

Originally I planned for a clump, but after trunks fused more, I started to see a twin or triplet trunk. Not sure if I'll keep it short or let it grow tall for more flowers.

Some toothpick sized ones earlier this year. Ume cuttings, a Chinese Quince and Japanese quince root cutting.

The maple airlayer from earlier. Separated a week ago, and still in its airlayer container. Didn't have to reduce the top. About 4 feet tall.
