Masterpiece
Trident maple from post 1 and 32. I've been doing root work others may frown upon not to prove I know better or anything. Just can't help myself, but the maple is tough and appears to not have been negatively affected.
I've been chopping off big roots in the spring and combing out the little surface roots in the early summer.
My practice would likely change when I can't depend on the benefits of ground growing.
I had to tie the top to a stake to keep tree from slanting last month; already it's firmly anchored. Trunk thickened nicely. Base under soil is awesome. Lots of little roots growing sideways. Going for a 4 or 5 inch trunk.
