I find it hard to believe that no one here wants anything soooooo....... I'm looking for a twin trunk A. palmatum , preferably one of the cultivars that keeps red in the leaves during the summer. Main trunk 1.5" or so and maybe 24" tall. Here's a Photo of what I'm thinking. This tree was on displey in central Cal and was ( and probably still is ) on Brents site. At least thats where I think I stole it. Sorry if I'm stepping on any toes.

This is a little depressing. 60 views and not one comment , not even to tell me I'm nuts and shut up and ask for something realistic.

You may be looking for something no one has. A Deshojo Maple is not a common cultivar and is difficult to find except maybe through Brent's business. To top that off you want a double trunk one. It's not like anyone has a couple of dozen of them floating around. You have to remember that these cultivars have to be cultivated through cuttings, graftings or air layers. You can't go out and plant a bunch of seeds, even those gathered from the cultivar of interest, and expect them to come true.

OMG I have a tree just like that one and I have been trying to sell it for months...

Sorry Dwight. I could not resist. 60 views does seem like a lot. I'm not sure the "wanted to buy" and "wanted to sell" areas will get much action here or on other forums. I think the sellers or people with trees similar to the one you posted (a beauty) simply are not looking here as a resource for a sale. It's a shame but it may also be the nature of the beast.

Best of luck.

Hay I got your Mercades....it's kinda old and needs a little work but it is a Mercades.....I did reread my original post and see nothing wrong with it. BTW , I've found about half a dozen since posting so it isn't that hard to find....and I didn't say anything about Deshojo or any particular cultivar. Anyway the nut put this section in , I'm just trying to help get the ball rolling. Buying and selling on a forumn seems like a neat idea to me. Doing business with people whom you can talk to easily is much better than going to commercial sites and HOPING you get what you want ( no Jason and Rich , I'm not implying anything ).

PS Graydon , thanks for the positive response

PPS Vance , following the posts by you guys has tought me exactly how difficult it is to find something like this , especially from someone who posts on the forumns.

First of all your original post on this string does not make it clear whether you are buying or selling. Secondly; if you put your cursor over the image the identification tag that comes up states that the tree is Des Hojo Maple. Sorry if I made an assumption. Thirdly your PPS to me on your last reply has the flavor of sarcasm to it, or maybe it doesn't; but it does make it clear that you seem to have difficulties saying what you mean in the written word, and is the probable source of your problems here.

You also have to remember, just because you post something on this forum , no one is required to read it or respond to it, don't take it personal.

You mean like THIS japanese maple?

Only selling for $400 on Yahoo! Auctions Japan :) Of course, you'd have to move to Japan and spend $1.4 million on a Japanese garden first, but you'd have a nice maple with some potential :)

1) The title of this section says " wanted to buy " so why should there be a question about wanted or selling ? Also the words " I'm looking for " might have been a clue.
2) The picture was an example of what I was looking for , not the exact tree. If you read the original post it says " something like this " so you did make an unnecessary assumption
3) Yes , probably a little sarcastic but the nut originally tried to tell us that if you can't be helpfull , don't say anything. The dealers out there don't usually post on this or any other forumn. I was hopefull that Brent , Jason , or Rich might offer suggestions but , alass ( sp ? ) they didn't
4) Please show me someone who does not have trouble making themselves clear all the time in the written word. Afterall it was you who originally assumed I was looking for a particular cultivar/variety.
5) I still think you're one of the greats in bonsai if for no other reason than your unflagging commitment to making the hobby/obsession more accessable to everyone so I still love ya bro.

Bnut and Boutlaw , thats the animal and $400 would be cheep.

BTW , Hollow Creek Bonsai has a bunch of maples and occasionally has twin trunks like the nuts illustration , though not nearly so finished. I know nothing about this particular dealer so if anyone does , it would be great if you would say a word or three.

Years ago I purchased some supplies from Hollow Creek and everything seemed to be fine. I did contact them via email earlier this year about a tree they had for sale. I asked to get more photos from different angles and from the top - never got a response. I always take that as a gesture that they do not want my business.

If you are considering one of their trees I would insist on seeing more photos, and better ones to boot.

Best of luck.

Dwight,
Have you tried going to local nurseries and looking at maples like "Bloodgood". They are actually fairly cheap stock compaired to some cultivars that I see in nurseries that still have a little gold dust left in the pot from where they were field grown in fields of gold!
Seriously, why not nursery shop instead of internet shop?
I went to HollowVreek to check maple pricing. Hmmm....
Don't those look like stock you MIGHT find at a regular nursery. If you know any landscapers, try asking to visit a wholesale-only nursery with him some day!! That REALLY pays off with over-priced types of trees!
Also, if you get a small tree in a pot at a nursery and plant/work on it in the ground a few years you'll find they grow pretty fast ( even without the gold dust!) . I was given a just-sprouted seedling of a rarer variety in a coffee cup by Nina Shishkoff about 5 years ago. It is now about 8 feet tall with a trunk almost as big as my wrist I think. It was going to be worked into a pot but I really like it in the yard!

Dale , Maples around here are pretty rare. I have found some nice bloodgood but they were grafted trees. One was almost exactly what I want and it was only $90 but the graft was 3" above soil line and UGLY. I'll keep looking though as a couple of locals get in a few each month.

Graydon , that doesn't sound very promising. Their prices seemed awfull high to me as the same stock in the local nurseries was always under %100. Of course the local stock is also grafted stock as described above.

BTW guys , thanks for the positive responses.

Why don't you consider air-layering some and getting exactly what you want?

Can you air layer a tree that has to be grafted ?? Maybe a stupid beginners question but the local botanist said the reason they are on grafts is because they won't grow on their own roots. Experts !

I started another thread under Maples asking basically this question.

going to local nurseries and looking at maples like "Bloodgood
My experience with this strain is that it makes a very rough bonsai. Tendency to long internode spacing amoung other unfavorable traits. There is a reason there cheap at the nursery....they can pop those puppies out extremely quick. I would recommend spending the energy on another variety. However if your heart is set on bloodgood we have an enormous one on the property with more seedlings under it than I ever wish to count. All outstretched and reaching for mama. If you want seedlings it would be my pleasure.

Thanks guys for the advice and thanks Tom , Thanks for the offer. I might take you up on it for the garden. Well you won't believe this one. I went to Lowres this afternoon to get stuff for the Japanese garden and swung by the trees on the way out when low and behold , a small group of Japanese maples appeared. Good price ( $64 ) , small very delicate leaves and it's still red so maybe it will stay that way. The tag says A.p." deco " which I assume from Lowes means " decorative ". Pictures tomorrow.
