A Question on Grafting Japanese Maples

My thought is to do a hybrid wedge graft airlayer.
Instead of snipping the roots off afterwards, you cut the twigs instead.

Slap a couple wedge grafts around a not-too-fat trunk in a helix-like fashion, and you'll both have a sweet transition because there's a "blend" of rootstock and scion material, as well as moderated swelling due to the mixing of cultivars instead of just glueing them together.

Not sure if that would work. I'm not that fond of maples. But I like expanding my ideas about what would work and what wouldn't.
