Just to add my Larch is in full sun and happy in a bonsai pot for several years. Good luck w/yours.

Looks very happy. love your back yard!
My experience lends me to believe that in my situation I may have boiled the roots if that’s possible.
Why I think this.
- newly collected tree was placed in mostly shade for recovery but not slowly introduced to the sun.
-black nursery can of moss and some pumice-stayed very wet and was watered daily.
- placed in around 7 hours of direct sun during 90+ F days.
=====roots unable to function??

I think it was a combination of things… A compromised but functional root system post collection and new foliage that wasn’t acclimated to full sun. I think that would set your tree up for severe sunburn and desiccation.

brad how’s it going? How are these trees doing now?
The largest of the three didn't make it, but the other two are doing great. Did a styling on my favorite this spring. Next year is a possible repot into something smaller / maybe a bonsai pot, we shall see!

Nick Lenz discusses collecting bog larch at length in "Bonsai from the Wild".
I’ve been looking for a copy at a reasonable price for the better part of 6 months. Dig that bad boy out, it’s worth something these days

This weather bums me out. 🤣
I planned on collecting some more tamarack next weekend.
Well last week we had record highs in the upper 80’s.
Almost all of my deciduous trees are budding out. Including the Larch. 12605926-98D4-498F-B11B-AB3522253664.jpeg08D5693B-D51B-45E0-8C7D-D258C26D4648.jpegA8C7CA33-9527-4DA5-B7E8-1D7D3DAE00CA.jpeg24B836FA-8CDF-4067-8DB1-29E3131F5500.jpegD2CB98F8-82C1-4AE7-9835-B3BAF7E39EBB.jpeg
Today we got snow. 96C55515-0AA6-44D5-A64E-ED408BE5A6D5.jpeg
The plants are confused.
Either way, I think I missed my window this year. I didn’t want to go earlier because with all the snow and recent rains, I’m sure the bog is real deep.
I will check it out next weekend to see if it’s possible the trees in the bog are behind the ones I have in my yard. 🤞

That warm weather really hit us fast this year! Everything budded out down here in Milwaukee as well. I’ll cross my fingers that you find some in the bog that are swelling and haven’t popped yet 👍

My larch from last season just popped their buds last week… fingers crossed that I’m done with snow, however, April snow in maine is not unheard of.

Thanks. If it’s a no go, then I’ll have to postpone till fall.

Finally getting around to reporting on my second collecting adventure at the bog.
In summary, it was a Great success. I think.

I got to meet up with two other bonsai heads from Wisconsin ( @B-funk allstars from Hudson, and Stu, from Amery)
We had quite the time wading in 3 to 3 1/2 feet of water.

85DC8519-7B4E-4738-B90E-C1E4CD6D0C7D.jpegStu didn’t have waders. But he was a warrior for the trees and didn’t let that phase him.
DEE09FBD-A4DA-49B8-B001-E1333FC7E00F.jpegThe sled was key. Floating the trees and tools around was brilliant. 5F9D867E-353B-48ED-A36A-D449A2B2E0E2.jpegStu with a biggin’.

Return back in the gator. Also a very nice tool!64FFA683-DA75-4B0F-A6A2-FE1353ED4AF2.jpeg
Brian with a smaller one. I don’t have a pic of it, but he collected a behemoth of a Tamarack he counted 50 rings on. Maybe you have some pics @B-funk allstars?

All in all a great time, getting some unique trees.

@vancehanna , I had a hard time finding small tamarack to collect for you. Every time we thought we found a young whip, it would continue down beneath the moss and water and ended up not being worth the effort.

I did however take some cutting off the collected trees, and put them in a pseudo forest arrangement for fun. If they live, it’s all yours! 🤣2B9B5351-4226-4303-B4DD-FFC04525B080.jpeg42D31F0B-9B1B-493E-AAD1-75B0CD9C952E.jpegEDEF1B52-BF3E-444D-AC64-3783DF0FDD9F.jpegECACD6CD-32B8-4B6C-B84E-32509F01ACB0.jpeg

We had a mild winter this year that allowed us to get out super early. Went canoe and kayak collecting with @MaineChowder

We got a “boatload” of larch this year!
(literally 😂)
" Old Town" I had the Kevlar anniversary edition. Incredible canoes! Sad day when I sold it! But the new owner was very happy to get his hands on one! Those larch have no idea how privileged they are for the " ride".

This is the Pack, it’s a Rolaiex solo model. About 35#, easy to drag just about anywhere. The Royalex boats were great, light and durable but they stopped manufacturing it after Spartech sold Uniroyal off to PolyOne. There’s been nothing like Royalex since.

The Royalex was a great format just q bit heavier than the Kevlar model. I needed the Kevlar for portage purposes.
