So my next club meeting is the second week of April. We talked about the meeting schedule and the speaker we has slated had to post pone for another month. So we decided to have a "bring your own tree to work on" night. So a couple of us were wondering : What can we bring that is safe to work on? Seems like it might be still a bit early for most things in the area?

I contemplated bringing a juniper to wire or maybe a boxwood to do some light pruning on.

Any suggestions on what might be safe to work on in our area the second week of April?

Almost anything can be worked in April. However, spruce wiring and hard pruning should wait until Fall. Also, black pine as you know, has time frame windows and it depends on the growth stage. The juniper would be perfect.

You are warm with boxwood. I work on those (the whole enchilada, not just light pruning ;) ) almost the whole year.

Tropical trees (if you have any) are good to work on (wire, prune, re-pot, etc.) when it is warmer.

It gets warmer in June around here.;) Believe me when I say that even in the end of May, practically into June, the temps can still be in the 40's. I don't think the tropicals in this area start looking good until July. It is an extremely short growing season.

Dang! I thought you would be at least 50s (for lows) by then! Scratch those then. :(

Ya, there are warm days, 70's etc. However, it is not uncommon for 40's-60's going into June. However, by the end of June/July it is in the 80's.

Cold nearby oceans (or in our case, Lake Ontario) can wreak havoc with early spring weather.

I remember the first year I lived up here, we had a day in April or May that was beautiful, low 70s and sunny. I decided to head up to the lake shore, wearing shorts/tshirt and with no jacket, sweatshirt, etc. As I got closer to the Lake (we live about 12 miles away) the temperature started dropping...dropping...dropping. When I got out of the car it was about 38 deg, foggy, windy.

Never made that mistake again! Even 12 miles inland we often get lake breezes in the spring that keep the temperature 10 deg or more below what they are a little further south.

On the other hand, our first frost/freeze in the fall is delayed significantly by the still warm lakes.
