? about bonsai/japanese term

Ive been reading Bonsai Techniques II for the last couple of weeks. There is a section were John Naka mentions Suso-Eda (hem branch). Is it just the lowest branch on the tree? THe lowest horizontal branch? Its not real clear what it is. Also not sure what makes a piercing branch also.

wich babelfish says mean something like "connect(s) bordering(s), small branch or emerging branch of a trunk"...Gee, that makes sense!

Suso-Edo is a small branch emerging from the trunk. Otherwise, it does not mean anything specifically - like the lowest branch, or the primary branch, etc.
