I think I already posted about this one, but I couldn't find the thread again, so :

July 2007 :

June 2008 :

The air-layers didn't survive the 2011 winter.

May 2009 :

Etc.

No trimming so far, but it needs a haircut...

Wow, nice save on that one. Over many years, too. I’ve given up hope and thrown away tridents in haste after setbacks, but won’t do that again.

I really like the double trunks that didn’t make it, too. Way to make lemonade out of lemons.

Nice. How much of those 12 years was spent in the ground or was it all in a pot?

Very encouraging, I've got something similar and was wondering if cutting a second trunk off would ever heal

Yeah.... 😄

I had almost no experience with air-layering trident maples, especially that size, so I overdid it, yes. Actually I was lucky there was enough living tissue for the sap flow. I have a big, grounded one (over 3 metres, 10 feet) that I'll air-layer next year, I won't be as "beaverish"....

I would bury it deep for a few years, then maybe new roots will grow out over top of what's there.....wider and better.

Very good advice : in fact that's what I'm planning to do next spring.

I have a rectangular pot, wider, deeper that will be perfect for the next 2-3 years - or more ?

Once again, I will let all the branches grow freely, more or less, for one season, then prune it back hard.
