so how worried should i be if my maple put out some new growth this early winter while this last seasons growth is dropping for the winter. i haven't noticed any significant heat waves recently and just about 2-3 weeks ago we started getting what we call in California winter weather low of 45*F and high of 60*F.

@Smoke has a collection of maples in california - i'd go to him first for this topic (and in general!)

got it. im not to worried about frost since it doesn't even get that cold here, but i was wondering if it will affect this next seasons growth. although i will be doing a major trunk chop this year

Let if harden and feed the tree a bit before chopping. There are fewer potential problems doing this after the first flush.
