@AlainK ...thanks for pointing that excessive comparison, I was close to the Godwin point. I regret saying that.

Alright, we are okay again ...

Big season ahead for this one.its woken up quite early, even though its been under the balcony bench in deep shade all winter.
i wasnt sure how much die back i would get in the V cut, it was made last aug/end of summer.
you can see where some cut paste has split, thats a tell tale sign that there is at least some callus beginning to form there...
and i put another piece of wire on two right side branches

Great start on this one, Bobby! I like your decision to shorten the left hand trunk. Initially it looked like a slingshot, but this way it should develop as a nice natural looking tree. Good work 👍

as we know, deciduous move fast in spring, especially maples. i thought was a good time to clean up clustering shoots or three from one point. in the crown ive shortened the long shoots back to two at each tip.
the middle n low shoots have been left to run with no pruning back apart from unwanted clustering.
this will allow the branches in the crown to ramify while the mid to low shoots get lots of light and become vigorous/stronger

little summer work on this maple...

mainly to position branches up n out for faster development.you can see from the first pic where branches are getting long and just sagging20200424_125543.jpg

so then youve got these empty spaces
20200424_125545.jpg

i want them to go up, out so all branches receive maximum light
20200424_143001.jpg20200424_143019.jpg20200424_143905.jpg20200424_144712.jpg

the low branches were snipped back to two, i feel theyre strong enough for the tree now and i need some back budding in the bottom left one.
the finer branches in crown snipped again.
a few branches were not touched, they need to thicken, but they were wired to position into negative areas.
btw this is just loose, basic wiring to position and get some movement in, some of these will be snipped back later

@AndyJ this maple had a pruning at the end of march...
here you can see where some shoots were cut, this pic is from today. those cuts were made end of march. scroll up and you will see the post from march 30
20200510_151301.jpg

they were unwanted shoots i cut off.
in favour of these in blue. look at them go.
a result of removing unwanted growth.20200510_151356.jpg

now i have to thin the left side again as some clustering is occuring.

today
20200510_152106.jpg

i have to prune in spring. i have set out my keeper branches. so i prune away unwanted growth or strong apical shoots that need thinning so other areas can catch up.
this is normal procedure for deciduous trees in training. imo you want to be on top of maples even more than an elm even, because theyre more prone to producing ugly knuckles and swellings.

its just down to a good root system. full sun. fed and watered well oh and a bit of branch selection and ascending branches also develop quicker. our growing season is short, so need to make the best of it.

Thanks Bobby - appreciate this. It’s good to be able to see how words relate to action. i think I’m getting enough info to be able to get a plan in mind for my Arakawa now.

I really like this Katsura of yours - it shows great progression in a relatively short space of time and shows what can be done to a novice like me. Incidentally, do you keep yours in full sun? Is the Katsura fully sun hardy? And do you mind me asking where you buy your maples in the UK?

Many thanks,

Andy

i think most maples and deciduous trees in general thrive in full sun.
i use nursery and garden centre material.

I really struggle to find any nursery centre material where I live. Other than the seedlings that also get sold in supermarkets. i guess there’s not much call for them up in the North of England!

it takes a bit of ground work.ive been to most of the wholesale, bareroot, landscape, tree nurserys and garden centres within a 50 mile radius of where i live.
up north you have a lot of open space with large houses with large gardens, so im sure theres an even bigger market up there for large landscape shrubs and trees.
if i go to my local garden centres rarely do they even stock hornbeam or beech because noone buys it but if i go out in surrey or kent there is loads.
