This past winter I picked up a new project for an exceptional price.. It was represented as Acer Palmatum ‘Coonara’ with the caveat that ‘the nursery said it wasn’t a graft’. So... There’s definitely a noticeable graft but that’s ok and was to be expected. It may one day get layered at the graft but first things first.
Here’s the tree after it flushed out.

It had few feeder roots when I repotted it after its bareroot arrival so my plan was to just grow roots and get the tree strong this year. So far so good.
Next spring will bring some significant decisions. Here’s my rough plan:

I think I’ll be growing all new branches And an apex. That’s ok. It’s a project.
Hear are some pics of the nebari. That needs work too.
Looks like an eagle’s beak

As always there’s more to the story.
Striking some cuttings this year and perhaps an air layer to have grafting material that’s sure to be needed. Thread, Approach and Root graft practice seems likely.
Thoughts?
Constructive criticism?
Thanks
